PRESS: Lebedev Confirms Closure Of Independent Print Newspapers

LONDON (Alliance News) - Evgeny Lebedev has confirmed the closure of the Independent and Independent on Sunday newspapers, with the last print editions to go out in late March, PressGazette reported Friday.

In an email to staff, according to the media trade magazine, Lebedev said the Independent will continue online, as Independent Print Ltd also confirmed the sale of Independent Print Ltd is selling its 'i' newspaper business to Johnstone Press for GBP24 million.

In the email, Lebedev confirmed that a number of employees at Independent Print Ltd will be made redundant.

"We will be the first of many leading newspapers to embrace a wholly digital future. All of us are immensely proud of the Independent titles, which are better newspapers now than they have been for many years, thanks to your remarkable creativity, work ethic and passion," Lebedev said in the email, according to PressGazzette.

"But UK print newspaper market conditions mean this change is inevitable," Lebedev said.
