Sector movers: Miners retreat as London market just about stays in positive territory

Fri, 19th Jun 2015 16:18

Greece continued to hound investor sentiment on Friday with mining stocks in general retreat, as the London market just about remained on positive ground. The blue chip FTSE 100 index closed up a mere 2.57 points or 0.04% at 6,710.45 with miners in general retreat from the previous session's high. While precious metals basked in the safe haven territory as gold spiked above the $1,200 an ounce level, base metals endured a troubling session driving down major mining stocks.Fresnillo (down 1.99%), Glencore (down 1.74%), Rio Tinto (down 0.64%), BHP Billiton (down 0.56%), Antofagasta (down 0.56%) and Anglo American (down 0.41%) all finished lower. Oil and gas producers also fell into red territory, with blue chips BP (down 0.71%) and Shell ('B' shares down 0.13%) trading lower.Tobacco stocks also fell back into the red down 0.37% or 158.29 points. Both British American Tobacco (down 0.25%) and Imperial Tobacco (down 0.62%) traded lower.Among the few bright spots were the technology and telecom sectors as shares in Colt surged 20% to 188p after Fidelity said it has made a 190p per share offer for the remaining in the stake in the company it does not already own. However, Colt's independent directors said they would make no recommendation to shareholders whether or not to accept the offer, which they believe undervalues the company.
