(Sharecast News) - American activist shareholder Edward Bramson has applied to join the board of Barclays, the FTSE 100 bank, it was announced on Tuesday.Bramson's Sherborne Investments fund vehicle, which has a 5.1% stake in Barclays, has submitted a resolution to be considered at the bank's 2 May annual general meeting, "for the purpose of appointing Edward Bramson to the board of directors of Barclays".Sherborne bought into Barclays in March 2018 with the aim of shaking up strategy and improving shareholder returns. Now one of the bank's biggest shareholders, Bramson is understood to be advocating for Barclays to scale back its under-performing investment banking arm. But that has put him into direct opposition with chief executive Jes Staley, who wants to turn the division around. At the third quarter results, the investment banking arm reported a 19% rise in income, to £1.2bn.It is understood that Barclays first refused moves by Bramson to become a non-executive director in December.
