Why discuss your position?

Monday, 24th August 2009 09:47 - by Boredmum

Some people are quite forthcoming about their holdings - how many they have, what their target is, when they buy some more, etc. Others do not discuss such matters and only talk about relevant company information. Some people, if asked, state simply that it is of no concern to others and lately I have seen why that is a good path to take. On one particular share I was involved with, there was a poster who was very ‘pro’ this company. They held a long-term belief in the ability of the share price. Unfortunately, this particular share took a dive and this person stated that they had previously sold quite a large holding. Well, people turned on them, saying that they were being insincere and duping people. I bet they wished they had stayed quiet. Put simply, it is no one’s business but your own. We all have a right to post and discuss information. It doesn’t matter if we are long or short. It doesn’t matter if we hold or we have sold or we are just looking to buy. So, it is irrelevant what someone’s position is. You may state that people have ulterior motives. If they do, then I doubt they would be honest about their position anyhow. From personal experience, in connection with one particular share, I held and sold the largest part of my holding on a rising share price. I found that a certain poster no longer addressed me in posting information. I still held the share, just not as many. It is only fair to assume that we are all here to make profit and it doesn’t matter if we hold 5,000 shares or 500,000 shares...we still have the same right to our opinions. The position is almost irrelevant.
