A very happy, healthy and prosperous 2023 to all posters here and their families. This is the time of year for predictions and new year resolutions so here goes.
I am of the opinion that VOD will soon have an energetic, forward thinking CEO, someone who will rid the company of its complacency and improve the lives of all shareholders and employees. Yes even ex-employees who have retained one share.
Upon the announcement of the new CEO there will soon after be a flurry of good news announcements, a slimming down of dead beat parts of the business, a promise to keep paying the divi and a paying down of debt. As a result the SP will rise exponentially and we can all pay our gas bills. Prediction over, best wishes all from everyone here up high on the hills.
I’ll go for the opposite on the assumption exponential means at least 2x. 170p next December, no.
The BOD also won’t hire energetic forward thinker. They are after someone to confirm their own theories, and accelerate a strategy that is not working.
If the new CEO cancels the div and buyback, I’ll take them seriously.
No mole the opposite of exponential is logarithmic mate.
Exponentially means to increase at a steady, rapid rate.
Don’t mention it, glad to assist.
or you could just open a savings account and have a very stress-free life, sounds very boring though ?
A balanced portfolio is what works best for me, you won't get them all right, but if you can get more right than wrong you will be ok, unless your very confident in what your investing in of course
but we all all different
Happy new year guys
dividend suspension or cut can only be done for the last dividend since the interm is already gonna be paid.
but suspending dividend like bt for 2 years can reduce debt by 5b euro.
Olaf Swantee, who ran EE for five years between 2011 and 2016 and who spent two months as a non-executive director on Vodafone’s board last year before deciding to step down.
He declined to comment on rumours that he is being considered for the top job at Vodafone or on recent developments at the FTSE 100 company.
"Many telecoms groups have got themselves into a “death spiral” of offering investors high dividends, which was stifling their ability to invest and innovate.
“When you don’t have growth in your model, and you just have a dividend story, the risk is that over a longer period of time, you can’t transform your business any more, you’re just a bank for your investors,” he said.
“The telcos that are stuck in a high debt/ebitda ratio?.?.?.?they are having a harder time to transform themselves successfully.”

Poker, that's fair comment. But telcos have a history of wasting capital on no growth. I am happy to see €5Bn free cashflow and maintain the dividend through the recession. VOD doesnt need to be 1st to blow its cash, can be 2nd and avoid mistakes
"He declined to comment on rumours that he is being considered for the top job at Vodafone or on recent developments at the FTSE 100 company."
I can't read the article as it's behind the FT paywall, but I'd suggest he isn't being considered for the post of Vodafone CEO; If he was being considered for the CEO post, he wouldn't be contributing to articles knocking the industry. The parts I've seen, in quotes on here, would suggest he's been eating some sour grapes.
“When you don’t have growth in your model, and you just have a dividend story, the risk is that over a longer period of time, you can’t transform your business any more, you’re just a bank for your investors,”
Established Telecom companies can't see growth unless they enter new markets, or are in underdeveloped third World markets. What established Telecom players can do is grow the bottom line through cost savings.
BT is a classic example of an incumbent that would find it extremely difficult to grow top line revenue, what they can do is invest in FTTP and 5G leading to massive cost savings once their transformation is complete. Once BT switches off PSTN and legacy network, moving to a full IP/Cloud model, they will need less staff, less buildings and the Network operating costs will massively reduce too. I think the market underestimates BT's ability to increase Net Income going forward.
Vodafone can see growth through their holdings in Africa and other developing economies, plus they aren't incumbent in the markets they operate in. Economies of scale help both Vodafone and BT, allowing them to build cheaper than the smaller newer entrants.
fleccy what must vodafone do to increase SP?
"fleccy what must vodafone do to increase SP?"
In my opinion non of the Telecom stocks will see significant SP rises, until the big market players swing the media narrative from negative to positive; Unfortunately its anyone's guess when they'll do that, in the meantime I'll keep topping up as funds become available. I'm baffled by the low valuations the market is placing on the Telecom sector, since Telecoms is an essential service and once 5G and FTTP rollouts are completed, I can't see any need for further major network infrastructure upgrades for decades to come.
Fleecy I wish that were true but upgrades to 5G will follow as sure as night follows day ... at a heavy cost.
6G is expected in the UK around 2030 & 7G is already being used in Norway, Holland & Hungary with many other countries expected to adopt it in the years to come.
It ain't easy this old telecoms investing lark.
6 and 7g i think we wont need to upgrade to that for a very long time but who knows
"6G is expected in the UK around 2030"
Gary do you even understand what 6G is? Because as far as I can tell even the media can't make their mind up what'll be defined as 6G.
From the hype I've read, 6G will be as much about applications as it is about bandwidth and latency, so it's likely 6G applications will be supported over the existing 5G infrastructure, so could utilise existing 5G Frequencies and incorporate design enhancements already built into 5G such as Massive MIMO.
At best mmWave and sub mm wavelengths will be useful in enclosed populated areas, like shopping center's, stadiums, trains, planes, etc, but outdoor distance communication at those wavelengths wont be possible. Bandwidth and latency is determined by distance and Frequency, so the much hyped 6G cells in the Extremely High Frequency (30GHZ to 300GHz) range are more and more limited by obstructions, atmospherics and even movement as the frequency increases; Sub Millimetre wavelengths are in the Far Infrared range (above 300Ghz), so you can imagine the issues providing service over distance outside using sub millimetre wavelengths, not really feasible in my opinion.
Gary you should read these articles:
https://www.lightreading.com/6g/6g-spectrum-game-of-centimeters/a/d-id/781917
https://www.microwavejournal.com/articles/38670-the-ideal-band-for-6g
In my opinion, 6g will be an add on to 5G and unlikely to involve massive infrastructure investment, by the Mobile providers, so not an issue.
"7G is already being used in Norway, Holland & Hungary with many other countries expected to adopt it in the years to come."
I just laughed when I read that Gary, you shouldn't believe everything you read.
Wow a Flying Saucer has just landed on the field opposite my house, I wonder if ET will phone home using ?G, it wouldn't surprise me if they've got (Q)G.
Is this you using (Q)G Gary?

Think I remember Three UK shipping '3G' handsets that wouldnt work on the 3G network. O2 and Orange allowed them to roam on their 2G networks for many years whilst they built out their network In the end, bulk manufacturers of 6G, 7G or 8G devices will go out of business if they havent used the 5G 'standard'. Or they might think they can sell to Norway or Holland but actually they are talking about internet speeds 'like 7G' not gsma standards etc.
I agree with Fleccy that the capital reinvestment cycle going forward is much lower than the past and will vary by country and have different adoption speeds.
Come on fleccy, We all know Gary is on another planet. The planet, I know it all. Happy new year.
Still being a tw at I see Danny Boy, how about not being one so much for your new year resolution. That & trying to make some money on the stock market like us know it alls.
Gary & Dan, give it a rest you two, i assume your both over 15, you don't have to agree with what anyone says on here but ping pong name calling is a bit childish
It's quite simple here really if you don't think this will go above the current price then don't buy, everyone can make their own decision on that
anyway happy new year all, and hope it's a good one
“do you even understand what 6G is?”
Too easy! If 0G force is weightlessness, then 6G is a little bit like having an elephant standing on your foot.
Gary, I can assure you I am trying to make money on the stock market, Unfortunately
Cont' though I don't know it all, so have to leave it to the market. Sorry!?
Hello robeo, the refereo. As you well know I am not an expert on the stock market, & I post on here as a sizeable vod share holder. I don't post as an expert, just a holder, on the vodafone share chat? (because I like to chat about vodafone) I don't pretend to know anything, because if I did, I would not post on this forum. & yes I am losing a lot of money on vod, so if any more shallow people want to ridicule me, bring it on, I can take it.
Hi Dan, for someone like me who was a complete novice at investing in the stock market, this has been very helpful to me for getting tips and advice from those who have a lot more experience than myself, but not all investments live up to expectations, as you have pointed out to me before you have to forget about what the share price might have been five years ago, and just think about what it is right now and what it could be, if only we knew the answers to that we could get very rich
But if everyone here could be honest, i think most will agree that the majority of shares are under performing right now
I know my pension pot is well below what i was expecting at this time, especially as i have just retired, i think we will just have to wait a bit longer for things to recover
