Have to agree. Sometimes the patience needed is the most difficult investment to make when looking at making a profit. Like your good self I ignored the rights and wrongs of the SD and used the cash to buy more. :)
would be very nice...holding for the long term

Indeed, sometimes patience is king.
It usually is with these "sleeper" stocks and then they wake up, largely because the investment community these days all seem to like crossing the road together.

No sign of the 'nay sayers' now. Last Spring this was the lowest risk defensive company to invest in. Investors are also forgetting the reduced costs of the Pension scheme and re negotiated loans. Happy days!
moniman Could not agree more its re-rating is well overdue and that could easily take the SP above 300 fairly quickly with or without any BB - AIMHO ADYOR.
I don't care whether its a buy back or a dividend, I'm just looking forward to the 300p plus SP in the coming months, as for the dividend give it to Boris to get a hair cut...:-). AIMHO ADYOR!
inspired imho

''They should have just bought shares back with the 5billion to start with''
You need to read up a bit- Tesco would only be able to purchase up to 20% of average volume on a daily basis. It would take years to spend £5 Billion on buybacks, which is why it was returned to shareholders in one lump sum.
The current buyback programme is 'ongoing', meaning that shares can be bought back on a continuous basis as a new tranche is announced. This would come from profits as they are earned rather than from £Billions sitting on the balance sheet..

''But it's a miniscule buyback programme, once again cannot see the point.''
How can an ongoing buyback programme be described as minuscule ?
£500 million is just part 1.

''The object of the buyback is to boost the share price in order to meet the requirements of the bonus scheme.''
The market decides on the market cap (share price) on a daily basis.
The object of a buyback is to return capital to shareholders by reducing the number of shares on the market. At the same time on a level earnings basis, the EPS would increase to the degree of the buyback percentage.
probably a reasonable move lti...im holding and will be for a long time....sold a very small portion of my bp position yesterday @350.073
Share price has slipped back , probably due to profit taking. Interesting to see what happens tomorrow . great results today i am holding for the time being. GLA
They should have just bought shares back with the 5billion to start with, would have made a huge difference compared !
Buy backs also eliminate shares you have to pay dividends on.
I worked for one company that paid a dividend of equivalent to 5% on shares at the SP and borrowed money at 1% to buy back shares that eliminated them paying out a 5% dividend.
If that makes sense?
We’ll done for selling, but on a day the market falls several % this will more likely move up to 300p when the market bounces back. It appears that the current energy crisis is fuelling panic everywhere, yet it was only a year ago when energy prices were almost at zero and you couldn’t give gas or oil away at any price! I’ll stick it out for 300p at the moment. Adyor GLA
Buybacks after a consolidation and phony Special Dividend cancelled out by the consolidation ? But it's a miniscule buyback programme, once again cannot see the point. At least this is simpler and won't continually swamp this board with questions about the consolidation and phony SD as per before !
The object of the buyback is to boost the share price in order to meet the requirements of the bonus scheme.
No it does not always work, if investors smell a rat and a sinking ship then they will jump ship too.
same here mate, took my profits , nice
just a small proportion of my holding at just under 272p
Although some may consider long overdue, credit where credit is due.I have long thought the company is sound purely because every time i visit my local Hatfield or Potters Bar stores they are always very busy. The public trust Tesco in my eyes for quality and substance.

''no one will even notice.''
I think the market has noticed the intentions of an ongoing buyback programme, unless you think that today's large rise is all purely down to the release of roughly expected profit figures.
Gaz
''Look at the numbers, 7.7+ billion shares will be reduced to 7.6 billion shares, a tiny, tiny, dent. Once the euphoria has gone, no one will even notice.''
£500 million, I think you will find will purchase a lot more than 120,000,000 shares.
Also that is a first tranche of an ongoing programme.
