What I've noticed most in our medium sized store is this Xmas they really got their stocking ,excuse pun, levels right. Hardly anything having to be yellow sticker marked down heavily on xmas eve as has happened previously. Must be a good sign for the company profits even if we didn't get many bargains.
We had a very busy Xmas in the store I work at, C&H +6% and food +9.7%
Ditto Carrington, the Red Sea shipping/ supply chain statement by NXT also spooked.
MKS share currently down - some of this due to profit taking I think after a recent good run and some may be due to the Next results today showing bumper sales - the read through may be that they have taken market share from MKS - Personally I don't think so - looking at the sales items left on the website it compares favourably to recent years which means more stock has been sold at full price - it will ultimately come down to the trading update next week - I am confident the results will be good - lets see
gla dyor etc
Let the rise continue. What interested me with the Aldi, Lidl and to a certain extent Tesco updates was not only the increased sales but the increased sales % of their premium lines. If the lower end of the market is seeing that during cost of living it can only be a good reflection on us. Only concern for me is clothing, the new range is good but are people buying? Find out next week, pleased we saw 285, if only briefly.

It doesn't include M&S so we can ponder whether we can outdo Sains. and Tsco on %gains on food sales; also whether clothing has substantially added to the picture. Me I'm bullish and suggest that the share price will continue rising between now and Thursday next week. JJ
JJ and Neil raise valid points, looking forward to your opinion / narrative next Thursday.
M&S currently rolling out CGT webinars ahead of maturing share save scheme, setting up S&S ISA via Equiniti for colleagues.
Good reading.

Marks & Spencer made a bright start to the new year following a bumper 2023.
On the first day of trading of 2024, shares in the High Street stalwart rose 1.3 per cent, or 3.6p, to 276p following an upgrade by analysts at BNP Exane Paribas.
That was the highest level for nearly five years and came after the stock more than doubled last year, jumping 120 per cent.
The rally came amid a major turnaround in its fortunes driven by higher food sales alongside booming demand for its revamped fashion ranges.
BNP Exane Paribas said it is optimistic about the retail sector’s prospects this year. Its analysts said M&S is likely to come out as a ‘Christmas winner’ when the industry publishes festive trading updates.
".....foreign holidays are down over same period, more mouths to feed at home." said Neil.
Excellent! And hopefully some of those remaining here would have been unable to afford to switch the heating on either, thus forcing them to resort to clutching onto the magnificent range of M&S hot water bottles to keep the chill out! Fortunately, we've got a great kids' range too!
Sorry for my tongue-in-cheek reply, Neil, but your post did seem to be wishing for our good fortune at the expense of those who might be struggling financially, albeit whilst accepting that a holiday's hardly a necessity.
Agreed JJ. Additionally foreign holidays are down over same period, more mouths to feed at home.
They have excelled but much of it can be put down to the effects of inflation on the cost of a basket of goods. Fully expect the M&S customers to have splurged on their food to impact the bottom line here. Not long to wait for the actual figures. JJ
Happy New Year to you too JJ and everyone else.
Yes a very strong start, currently showing a quarter of the 10% needed for £3, we've done roughly 10% after each of the last 3 updates so bodes well. Ideally I'd like to see us over 285 before hand to give us a better chance of still being £3 plus at the end of January.
Fingers and toes crossed, good luck all.
Looking good for a fantastic run now.
Peace and goodwill to all. JJ

A 10% lift from here will mean we are over the £3 hurdle, and every chance this will happen by the moment we hear the trading update, what a turnaround? JJ
Merry Christmas to all, and we get another Christmas celebration in 17 days time. Praise to the Lord and M&S.
To all the LTH's here... I hope you are enjoying the festivities. It's been a great year here. Thanks for all your contributions on this board... Kept me sane over the years! Looking forward to what 2024 brings for Marks.
