Punishing success is the politics of envy.
USSR, Cambodia, North Korea, UK 1970s, nobody wants to go back there.
Meritocracy isn't politics of envy, it's politics of reality and fairness. It isn't "envy" to give a crap about someone less fortunate than yourself, it's called having a conscience.
Red politics of envy never end well. You can see it here at LLOY. The share price is being held down by fear of a bank windfall tax.
Gazzleberry.
Where do trade union leaders get their money from! no trade union leader ever died poor or lived in a 2up 2down house.
Politics is about one thing enriching yourself, it attracts the chancers, the egomaniacs those with narcissistic traits, such as Blair and Brown. Thatcher got plenty of kickbacks, even a free house from Barrats Homes, the same company that Lloyds could partner in their property come money-losing scheme.
Harold Wilson promised to take the country into the White Heat of Technology, then commence the destruction of the British Aerospace industry, followed by every other political party there afterwards , he also signed us up to the 1975 UN agenda to move industry to the third-world, something now forgotten, but please look it up'
John Major, said he wanted a society where WEALTH TRICKLED down through the generations, but paying for care in ones old age put paid to that little lie
Gazzleberry,
"When it comes to politicians enriching themselves, you do not need to look any further than Thatcher (may she rot in Hell). She didnt get that wealth from hubby and the PM's salary. And as for the wretch of a son, where did he get that money and property from."
I cannot let that go without a reply.....
Spend a bit of time doing some research on the "Kinnock's" in particular whilst a European politician, oh and whilst your at it don't forget Tony Blair.
You can't tar one with a brush without the others....
machissmo
Not all empty properties are empty because of the reasons you mention. As to quote many on here do your own research. And by the way, I can't stand any of the present Tory Cabinet, nothing but inept middle-class, liberal scum the lot of them.
machiismo
Meritocracy, the last politician I heard mention that as an aim, was a certain Scot, named Tony Blair and we all know where he got us. Just as his fellow Scot said he had killed off boom and bust !. But they did enrich themselves so perhaps that is what they meant.

They won't give England a referendum they know what the answer will be ~ freedom.
Interesting that the person I tend to agree with most on here is Scottish. Must be something in the water up here after all..
Brixton
If Scotland decide to stay as part of the UK (I hope they do) then you and those in the South East can do the inverse and have a referendum for England leave the UK. lol.

Hope you get another independence vote and leave "yes" brilliant. London and the South East more than happy to make a finacial contribution.
Bumble
We can do better. We have the means, we just need the will. And that comes from an electorate that aren't apathetic to the status quo, who don't hate the poor and who don't venerate the rich.
Mach,
The general standard of living in this country is good, its not perfect but its better than many.
If you want to talk about inequality take a look at Los Angeles and the divide there.
Anyway I've said enough!
You can advocate for a fairer system without advocating for communism you know? It's really pathetic when all you right-wing trolls immediately jump to sad socialism/communism tropes whenever anyone suggests that an egalitarian meritocracy should be something to strive towards.
Not everyone in society deserves to be rich, but no one deserves to live in poverty and we have enough money in this country to raise the living standards for everyone. Billionaires shouldn't exist, nobody needs more money than they can spend in a lifetime.
Some people will always do better than others. When lefties finally get that life 'isn't fair', they'll be much happier. "Boo hoo, he's got more than me."The alternative is socialism/communism. Everyone should be responsible for their own success or lack thereof. Striving for something is what makes life interesting. Some are bound to fail. That's life. Compare the 'struggles' our 'poor' have to deal with and compare it to some of the actual poor in the world. Jesus. Whining socialists can go on.
"Latest Government data released, show there are over 288 thousand properties in England and Wales that have been sitting empty for six months or more."
It's almost as if landlords and multiple property owners are so wealthy that they can leave properties empty for six months or more without it affecting their lives in any meaningful way. It's almost as if we live in a deeply unequal society where a small number of people can afford multiple homes while millions more can't afford just one. Not to worry, I'm sure it won't lead to social unrest at all...
Gazz
You live in a freezer. Artic circle yes ?
"the money paid is well deserved for being the best and markets see that and reward accordingly"
That is a complete fantasy told by upper management to delude themselves into justifying obscene paychecks. The average UK chief exec earns 120x their average employee. They are not working 120x harder or are 120x more skilled than the vast majority of their staff. Anyone that's worked in a corporate environment knows that all to well.
Much like in politics, it's a small number of people that shape the debate and frame their greed as justified to the ever hopeful who eat it up, because maybe 'one they'll be rich too.'
It's a joke.

" cess pit south east , you got better quality of life " north of Aberdeen ! .
Yep sure you have . MISTER HAPPY
Housing shortage !
Latest Government data released, show there are over 288 thousand properties in England and Wales that have been sitting empty for six months or more.
Gazzleberry,
No need to apologise.
Like I said maybe more tax breaks need bringing in for low income workers to encourage saving and to help with buying their 1st homes.
Anyway, let's see what today brings on the market!
Gazzle,
I was generalising, no offence was meant, mach was the person talking about not being able to buy a house on a minimum wage job.
All workers should be encouraged, as with saving, getting people out to work is great for the economy.
Anyway nothing wrong with any job, was just trying to highlight (maybe badly) that if minimum wage is the only income property ownership will be difficult.
Bumble crazy money is a con!
I disagree with you on crazy money paid. The money paid is well deserved for being the best and markets see that and reward accordingly
Mach,
The problem is there's plenty of people with high levels of disposable income, second or even third home owners, 6 or 7 figure share portfolios.
I also know people who get paid crazy money, youngsters earning £60 to £100,000 a year.
I live in a very nice coastal location, when nice properties come on the market here they disappear within a week, if they make it onto the market at all!
All the time you have people with these levels of spending power the housing market is only going to get harder.
eviking,
Times and society have changed, 50 years ago it was (generally) the man who went out to work and the wife stayed at home.
It's just not like that now, couples need both incomes.
Likewise with retirement, if you've still got your health then why not carry on working.
Mach.
There will always be people who cannot afford a house, especially when you state "minimum wage" but it was bloomin hard when I bought my 1st house, especially with double figure interest rates.
If you stack shelves in Tesco's you ain't going to be buying a house, that isn't something new.
Yes I know there's people with decent jobs priced out of the market but what's the answer?
