Syrian opposition groups agree to take part in Geneva peace talks: UN envoy by DPA March 21, 2017 1:05 pm Share this! Tweet this! ! Special envoy Staffan de Mistura confirmed on Tuesday that Syrian opposition groups have agreed to take part in the next round of peace talks in Geneva on Thursday. It will be the first time both government and opposition representatives have been present at the talks, which are designed to find a political solution to a civil war that has raged for six years and claimed around 400,000 lives. A climate of mutual distrust had meant that each side had previously spoken separately with de Mistura. The opposition groups’ assent means talks will begin as planned. The talks are expected to last until April 1. Matters that would be discussed will be the creation of a nationally unified government, a new constitution, elections and anti-terrorism measures. NAN recalls that on Feb. 20, the Syrian opposition sent a team to UN-sponsored peace talks with the government in Geneva. The 21-member delegation was led by Nasr al-Hariri of the Western-backed Syrian National Coalition, the Higher Negotiations Committee (HNC), an opposition grouping, said late Saturday after a two-day meeting in Saudi Arabia. Half of the delegation represent the opposition forces fighting on the ground, the HNC said in a statement. The team will be backed by a 21-member panel of political, legal and military specialists, it added. The opposition bloc also called for international efforts to shore up a fragile ceasefire that went into effect in Syria in late December. Syria’s conflict, which started with peaceful anti-government demonstrations in March 2011, spiralled into a full-blown war that has claimed more than 300,000 lives and driven about half the pre-war population of 22 million from their homes.(dpa
I don't think it will come to a buy out situation.. I feel there is a lot of pressure to lift the sanctions.... WorldMarch 21, 18:45 UTC+3 Sanctions against Syria are among the biggest sanction packages ever imposed by the EU Share 2 HMEIMIM, March 21. /TASS/. European countries should take part in efforts to establish peace in Syria and lift sanctions against it, parliamentarians from the Council of Europe said as they visited Russia’s Hmeimim air base with a delegation of Russian lawmakers on Tuesday. "I saw it for myself that Russia accomplishes here an important and huge humanitarian function to bring peace to Syria. I want to express admiration for Russia, the people who are doing so much to see peace established here," Italian Senator Antonio Razzi told reporters. "I hope that Europe and all people of good will take part in this peace process that will be to the benefit of the whole humankind," he went on. Czech deputy of the European Parliament Jaromir Kohlicek, for his part, said that sanctions against Syria must be lifted. "My position in the European Parliament is clear - I am firmly against the sanctions imposed by the European Parliament. This position has strengthened during this trip," the Czech parliamentarian noted. Parliamentarians visited on Tuesday the Russian airbase, where they met with the command of the Russian group in Syria and familiarized themselves with the activity of the Russian center for reconciliation of warring parties, which renders humanitarian aid to the country’s population.
Urraca - I believe the people of Europe are now more mindful of the consequences of foreign policy decisions taken by their leaders and there is considerable pressure to encourage a settlement in Syria.
Agree in4cedros, I'm going to do some more digging on EU intentions. The EU stated position for lifting sanctions has been rendered absurd by Putin's support for Assad. Not that the EU let reality get in the way of policy. Even the fact that they've made life materially worse for Syrians, and thus made the influx of Syrian refugees into the EU much worse than it need have been is not remotely acknowledged.
Uracca - agree optimists might struggle to make a bull case from that EU holding statement which sounds rather like business as usual - crisis what crisis! Plenty of time for change and observers might want to watch Federica's latest video for a better idea of EU intentions - she is placing much store on the 05/04/2017 EU/UN &Others Reconstruction meeting.
Much as I'd love to see the sanctions lifted, and agree it will cause a substantial rerate, don't hold your breathe. The JOINT COMMUNICATION TO THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND THE COUNCIL Elements for an EU Strategy for Syria was published last week (14th). This is what it says about sanctions (last para pg9 if you want to check): The EU will maintain its restrictive measures against Syrian individuals and entities supporting the regime as long as the repression of civilians continues. The measures targeting certain sectors of the Syrian economy will also be maintained as far as necessary. The current sanctions will be extended further as necessary. The EU will keep the impact of sanctions under constant review and will regularly consider options to mitigate any unintended consequences. Sorry guys, don't want to be down on this, but I'm always wary of trading on the basis of 'City whispers'. They're just as likely to be a pump and dump.
I knew it was a lot that was owed to us but that's slightly more happy days for everyone...
Hoping for a lot more than 35p. As soon as this hits T20 range of the Sanctions decision, this will start flying. Best to start accumulating now.

If this gets to that price I will have made a profit.... 09:55, 21 March, 2017 YEREVAN, MARCH 21, ARMENPRESS. Syrian authorities are ready to discuss the country’s new Constitution, but they want to know who will take part in the Geneva talks, President Bashar Al-Assad said, TASS reports. “We are ready to discuss everything, including the Constitution, but we need to know who are going to take part in the Geneva talks, whether they are going to discuss the same document or not”, Assad said. He recalled that the Syrian opposition’s delegation didn’t take part in the regular round of Astana talks last week. He said this decision is linked with Turkey’s “negative influence”. Earlier Russia proposed a draft on establishing a constitutional commission which will deal with preparation of new Constitution. The 5th round of Geneva talks on Syria will launch on March 23. The sides are going to discuss the creation of the Government, the schedule for the development of new basic law, the elections and the fight against terrorism.

sanctions currently in place against Syria include an oil embargo, restrictions on certain investments, a freeze of the assets of the Syrian central bank held in the EU, export restrictions on equipment and technology that might be used for internal repression as well as on equipment and technology for the monitoring or interception of internet or telephone communications. These measures were last extended on 27 May 2016 and are in place until 1 June 2017.
The EU remains committed to finding a lasting political solution to the conflict in Syria under the existing UN-agreed framework, as there is no military solution to the Syrian civil war. The EU is also the leading donor in the international response to the Syrian crisis, with over €9.4 billion from the EU and Member States collectively allocated in humanitarian and development assistance since the start of the conflict. To define how the EU could play an even stronger role, the European Commission and the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy have adopted a joint communication proposing a forward-looking EU strategy for Syria on 14 March 2017, which will be presented to the next Foreign Affairs Council on 3 April. The legal acts adopted by the Council, including the names of the persons concerned, are published in the Official Journal of 21 March 2017. They were adopted by written procedure.
