Exactly. Meet the studios half way and agree to it for this year or this movie only. Next year it's a new ball game.
Maybe Mooky could make an exception making it clear its just for this extremely unusual year.
Disney plus live in....
"Disney Plus is now live and available to stream in the US, Canada, the Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Austria, Germany, Ireland, Italy, France, Spain, Switzerland, India, and the United Kingdom"
According to Bloomberg...
..isn't that pretty much most of CINE?
So which theatres will it be showing in .... just where there is no Disney + service.... so which ones are those ?
Am I correct in saying that this is an announcement relating to Mulan and not all future Disney releases? If that is the case then I think this is good news because it confirms that Mulan will be released this year, which is good for cinema. If I were Mooky I would take that - for this movie only. That will benefit both cinema and studios in terms of cash flow in the short term. Once things are back on track next year then studios will see the standard model of cinema first, VOD later as the most profitable option again.
Mooky's position is not to show a movie that doesn't respect the theatrical window.
No Mulan.... It's that simple.
Until this issue is resolved and Mooky says different. I'm pulling out to protect my interests.
Hollywood reporter is saying, it's only cinemas in countries where Disney + isn't live. However i'm listening to the same call as them and not sure I heard that (I might be wrong). Will confirm when they release the call transcript
I’m A Bit worried aswell over this, I still have faith in cine coming out the other side and Want it
Above £1 again etc but I think the shorters might be getting a bit More out of it yet Until the dust settles
Not the best of News
Couldn't you see it as mixed news...the biggest fear people seem to have around cineworld is liquidity, now Mulan could be out in cinemas in a month. Disney plus could take some of the people who go to the cinema away but how much, if 80 percent of the expected cinema goers still went to the to see it, thats still a better outcome than if it was delayed months further? Long term it could set a bad precedent, but the cinemas could get strict again once covid has lessened as an issue? Mooky could argue that, they are atleast charging people 30 dollars to watch it at home, might help him save face? lol
Not for me now... This has turned into a right sh*t-show. I was in an OK place up until this announcement.
It's all well and good having faith in the business and Mooky but this issue is a problem for me.
As Mooky said...
"....Clearly we are not changing our policy with regards to showing only movies that are respecting the theatrical window.”
So with that, I can't see how this is going to be good... Either Mooky loses face or Disney relent. I'll be adjusting my interests accordingly until I've a better understanding of the situation.
GLA
Not worried. Disney wants to test the market. This cost over $200 million in production costs. But this is a prime movie to be hacked and viewed for free on the internet. Plus selling it at $29.99 more than Trolls. We will see how this fares. They need over 6.5 million viewers to pay for this out of their 60 million subscribers. When Tenet takes over a billion at the Worldwide box office an this takes only $100 million. The studios will need to go cap in hand to the cinema chains.
Plus it's only available on the Premium service
Plus it's a one-off with theatres still closed, so say Disney
Maybe the cinemas should go along with it in this moment just because they're all in a more difficult position than studios atm. However next year they could start playing hard ball again as a unit and go back to not showing films that don't respect the window.
Unless I'm misunderstanding it seems people have to pay 30 dollars even if they're subscribed to disney, surely there's only an incentive if you're a family with more than 2-3 kids?
Mooky re stated his opinion after the amc universal deal and he is a very proud man - but he loves cinema and wants it to survive. I cannot imagine what comes next. Vicious business this. Every day an unforeseen twist. Not looking forward to tomorrow myself.
I'm not happy with that development. What now?
Will Mooky now refuse to show Disney and Universal movies at all his cinemas?
Who's calling whos bluff here?
This causes a problem for me and the reasons I am invested in this business. It may mean I now reduce my holding and wait to see exactly what the fall-out may be.
Not a happy bunny.
*Cinemas want Studios to respect the theatrical window
The question now is, will Cinemas play ball or not.
Studios want to respect the theatrical window but they can't afford to not have a blockbuster movie like Mulan on the big screen. Disney are also playing a very dangerous game here. If they don't get cinemas on board, who will want to pay $30 to watch Mulan at home instead of the big screen experience. Plus it will get bootlegged almost immediately.
Where is my popcorn, this is going to be fascinating to watch what unfolds.
Not good news really ... the studios are making life difficult for cinemas ... Disney just announced Mulan to be released on Disney+ and at theatres “that are open” simultaneously ... who’ll see it at a cinema given the choice?!
