Gets a mention from Moneywise PRIVATE EQUITY Private equity companies - firms not quoted on the stockmarket - can generate significant growth for investors, but they are more risky and more likely to fail. Also it is difficult for ordinary investors to gain a direct stake in a private company. This is where private equity trusts can come in useful. For Richard Wadsworth, partner in wealth managers Fitzallan, these trusts are an attractive satellite holding in an investment portfolio. "Private equity can provide a different type of return to mainstream businesses," he says. "The advantages of going through a private equity trust are that you have the comfort of knowing there is an expert board of directors overseeing the investments and greater regulation - regarding valuations, for instance." Wadsworth likes Pantheon International Participations. This is a fund of private equity funds, so it provides even wider diversification than a directly invested fund. Candover is another of his picks.

Anyone any ideas why the sudden fall in SP ?
Looks like you have done very nicely on this one! Continued GL!
Got in originally at 188p after a 20% drop for know reason. Sold at 360p but got in big at 406p. Look at the rate of increase very steady but increase it does. Will never rocket but an excellent medium term hold. 600p is resistance but will pass it as market picks up momentum.
Picked this share out on the breakout list on ADVFN. Didnt really buy into it with a long term strategy in mind - just grabbed a bit of momentum @ about 449p. But fair play, this ones been a nice solid producer ever since. Took a slight breather, and relaxed the price a bit after testing the £5 mark (as expected after the previous jump), then powered right through! Bough initially as a short term breakout play, now its getting a bit more 'long termer' respect from me! Property shares seem to be outperforming - I bought CLI on the same day as this, and done equally as well - if not a bit better! Again bought on breakouts - but showing long term potential (although CLi was never a 20 squid share before).
Its unusall to see people in this share wish i had stayed in. had a great run if you got in a a pound but not so good if you got in at £12.00 as a relative of mine did.I also bought into svi capital for a long termer
love this share, been in since March when it seemed like a bit of a punt. the company now looks good, solid. sure it will get back up to where is was a few years ago, although it will clearly take time, just wish i knew how long!
Patience! Looks like you had the right idea after all! 581 today - aint bad! GL
my time on this...typical get and it dives...
This is rocketting today! Glad i had faith!
Any thoughts on if this is a good price to get in at?
Now that it is clear that the covenants will be met and the vultures are to be disappointed , the way is clear for recovery in Candover's share price. A more appropriate discount to assets of over 900p should be attained as confidence is regained . For a start Board members will now be allowed to buy stock-watch this space!
You will have gathered that the issue is meeting banking covenants in a month or so,which Board says they will do, despite the F.T. claim to the contrary. Having met Board at the AGM recently, and hearing of their their experience and commitment ( one is former CEO of Consolidated Goldfields etc.)to sort things out, I find it inconceivable that they won't extract far more than the current value of the business out of the considerable assets under management, but it will take time. I
the right time to buy as there is probably further for this to drop and I have seen people mentioning £1 but will it really go that far? Thanks to all in advance and apologies for putting my limited knowledge in front of all you more experienced investors. Regards Doc
I am a novice and would like some advice. I am not averse to taking a risk but I like to minimise that risk where possible. This share came to my attention a few months ago when I first bought some shares in aviva as it was regularly on the top losers. I noticed it again due to today's headlines. I have done some research but I am not the worlds greatest so that is the reason for my post my humble summary of the situation is as follows. NAV just over £9 per share. Rumours that they may breach their Banking Covenant and withdrawal recently of a potential suitor. I haven't managed to find the level of debt but presumably even if they fail the covenant test an this has to be broken up the value is still far greater than the current share price. Alot of the value lost by the stock market was in 2008 and CDI wrote down their assets by 50%, is this likely to be enough? presumably some of those assets have now recovered some of their value. in the year end results or at the AGM not sure when it was mentioned that 60% of the companies held were ahead of Q1 projections. I suppose what I am saying is there seems a lot of potential upside to this but I am great at seeing the upside without seeing the downside ( i do it when I play poker also). Please can someone put forward the downside so I have a balanced view and to assist me in my research. I notice a lot of 8.3 announcements yesterday which did not look great. Presumably even if this is a buy this is not quite
Hi people, Have they given us a date for this news?(fiscal tests by uk government) Thank you in advance
they stipulate that candover may fail the fiscal tests by uk government. This is denied by candover, but the stories in the ft are not to be dismissed that easily....wait and see
Hi Bev, I've just found this share by chance, what was the rumour that forced the SP to fall so sharply?
The F.T. report today , by forcing down the price on an erroneous rumour has thrown up an opportunity to tap into at least £9 worth of assets for under £2. Not surprisingly a number of astute investors have been filling their boots today. As always value will out for the patient.
That would be about now then..... : ). I'm topping up. Big drop no news... interesting,
waiting for this to drop and im getting in also looking at svg capital both risky but if all goes well in a few years time could see some good returns
