"They bought C&W only for the fibre infrastructure. And in my professional opinion (given that I was once the onsite liaison for my company to C&W) that the C&W UK infrastructure wasnt very good really !"
Onsite where, in what expertise, and how much exposure did you get to the core network? I think Vodafone picked up CWW for a bargain personally, so what did they get for the money? Hmmm:
A national core backbone DWDM Network, plus Buildings, staff, NOC's, etc, etc.
An array of Corporate customers.
Various submarine cables/Landing stations in the UK, and partnership submarine capacity in Cables all over the world, as well as expertise in managing/building Submarine cable systems.
The ability to connect their remote cell sites to their own terrestrial core network.
Server farms and core cloud network
etc, etc, etc.
I could go on and on, but Vodafone got CWW for bargain basement imo.
RichTheNewbie it is not "this board" but "some people on this board with vested interest" , just clarification :) :) :)
Vod paid about £1Bn for C&W and from memory and was able to avoid [£0.2Bn] pa of BT costs alone. Good deal for Vod to say the least imo. Included global submarine networks and terrestrial networks for the global internet backbone and Vod large enterprise customers. Technology and kit has moved on so I imagine hard to upgrade all of it and control costs. aimo dyor..
They bought C&W only for the fibre infrastructure. And in my professional opinion (given that I was once the onsite liaison for my company to C&W) that the C&W UK infrastructure wasnt very good really ! But hey when an overpaid director gets an idea its hard to turn it around. Also IMO I dont think VOD got a fraction of the value from this acquisition, I would almost say they bought C&W rather like pinning the tail on the Donkey at a kids party !
We used to call the Newbury campus 'Starfleet HQ' !
Only this messageboard could turn good news into imaginary bad news in an instant. Zzzz
terrible news. Now vod will pump more money into india. Expect another div cut if that happens
Vodafone Idea in India soaring (risen nearly 50% in the past two weeks).
Probably due to this: https://www.india.com/business/vodafone-idea-airtel-share-prices-soar-details-here-4959183/
I dumped my shares three weeks ago - good choice from the looks of it.
the next centrica I think... sub £1.00 easily a possibility - too much debt!
'spain'
thats good news if they are allowed to cut the costs.?
https://kfgo.com/2021/09/15/vodafone-spain-plans-to-cut-up-to-515-jobs-amid-intense-competition/
spain is doing bad
Well they bought C&W so that bodes well.
They haven't even gone back to work in Newbury yet, They have a campus holding 5.5k people and there is a just a handful in there. pathetic. They may as well sell the buildings if they are too scared to work in an office now. They spent an absolute fortune building a new campus replacing 85 separate buildings i n Newbury and now they are too weak to ask their staff to turn up.
I was as telecom professional prior to retirement, and I remember the time when VOD was one of the most prestigious organisations to work for but slowly over the late 90's early noughties the life was sucked out of the company by greedy uncaring boardmembers. In fact a similar story to C&W which doesnt really exist any more. VOD could still be great but the corporate debt figure needs to be addressed IMO..
It's because VOD is crap.
Periodically there's a little rally which suckers people like us in, followed by a quick reversal. That's what the market does.
It's notable that even though half the shares are owned by institutions none of the leading successful funds hold VOD .
That's today's contribution to the LSE VOD support group from me.
'Why is SP going down even though they are in buyback'
more sellers than buyers?
Why is SP going down even though they are in buyback ?
They need reduce costs and hence debt by not piling into more and more infrastructure investments which mean profit is continually eroded.
You say that as if the BoD could just easily do X and make the share price double. If you'd got some magic answer that would allow that I'm sure they'll be all ears...
Well my 'recent uptrend' comment seems to have scuppered it. It does indeed appear that the BoD are determined not to allow shareholder value.
Have a nice time robleo. Please bring back some good luck on your return. We are all going to need it. Yes, I am a bit depressed seeing many of my shares going down every bl**dy day......darn.
Enjoy the Spanish sunshine buddy. Forget about the shares for a few days. It will be good for you .........lol
sidi, cheer up buddy, you seem a bit down in the dumps, off to Gibraltar tomorrow , may not be able to afford a holiday next year when I retire, as my pension pot is dwindling away lol, your definitely a professional compared to me, I should have taken my wife's advice and bought premium bonds, will have a peak at the shares in the morning, then try not to look for a week, I'm sure things will get better, just don't ask me when lol
take care
Thanks fleccy, I am happy being corrected as I never considered myself as an expert here. I am just a depressed investor. What I said was coming out from the mouth of a depressed investor. It doesn't have to be true but only disappointed with situations. Thanks again for your in-depth analysis. Please keep it up.
That's a good example of where we are right now I think, I'm sure sidi is right about me picking a few wrong ones though, but most of my holdings were doing ok before including Vodafone, and think there's potential there for most of them to recover eventually, my Lloyds shares for instance were making good gains up until may, when they reached 50p with, expectations of 70 before the end of the year, they have now dropped back to 42p, I guess there's just too much uncertainty at the moment with Brexit and Covid still looming over us, so I expect we will just have to ride the waves for a while, and hope for a good recovery next year
