Starting to look like good value. World cup on the way if the weather turns and England get a decent run then potential for good summer trade. Just so long as kane doesn't take the corners. Timing of the matches is also good.
Possibly Morgan Stanley on the 16th, upgrading to overweight and from 610 to 640 target price. Breaking some the broker negativity. Hoping to move forward to 600 over the summer, and really hoping they take Marston's with them.
Sunday Times punter Ian Cowie highlighted GNK in his column published 18th March by noting the 6.8% yield (approx x2 covered) when he bought at 490p. Certainly a big draw for an ISA account. He did flag the business issues facing the brewing sector and specifically the level of company debt. Anyone got an opinion on what will cause a re-rating of this share/sector?
Yes! On the money there Huwie. At first sight these results are weak beer and soggy excuses are becoming baked in for Greene KIng. I have no faith in the management and little in the sector under current trading conditions. However, there is probably 10% upside from here at least. A World Cup year, Royal wedding to come and if we avoid snow then tarding should be stable or improving. The biggest threat is a cut to the dividend but the company must be smart enough not to do that. Given the massive yield and in spite of today's update being its usual underwhelming self I think we will see a bounce in these up to 580p in the coming months.
Another very positive trading statement from JDW today. What's the betting that GNK are downbeat, blaming Brexit, snow and potential WW3?
L7 thanks for your insight,if it stays around this price (famous last words)I'm in no hurry to sell , I'm hoping with the upcoming World Cup and the Royal Wedding their might be some positive sentiment towards the sector in general.
D, I don't think GNK is trading significantly worse than the other companies in the sector, but you'll know when they update on the 25th with trade and other company updates before then. Generally the sector is unloved. With a few exception (JDW, Young's) share price performace other the last five years has been poor. So to a value investor the sector is looking interesting. The challenge is that the sector offers a smorgasbord of flavours - location, debt profile, dividend policy, target market, cost control, wet/food/lodgings mix, brewery/distribution options, investor perception, etc. So the options are to choose a recipe and hold your nose, or walk away. The winners will be announced in five years time. Londoner7
This is my worst performing share at the moment,I'm averaging 578p. It seems to me after MAB update today ,and already hearing from other pub/bar entertainment companies they've all had a pretty decent trading over the xmas period so why wouldn't Greene king continue with that trend in a couple of weeks ? The share seems to remain unloved and if there is bad news to come I seriously think the financial authorities may have to take a look.Maybe I'm a sore loser but logically this doesn't make any sense, why would all the other pub/bars be full over xmas but Greene king establishments remain empty? If someone thinks I'm wrong could they please tell me what's the true value of the share and reason for it. Seriously I'm always willing to learn .
At my local, they have this 2 for 1 offer on prosecco between 4pm and 7pm. Result, the place is busy with loads of women with multiple glasses of the fizz in front of them. Alas there is little or no room for ale drinkers. However, on the stroke of 7pm the tills revert back to the normal price and they sup up and disappear into the night. This alters the trading pattern , later in the evening the place is empty. Doesnt make sense to me but then you are what you drink and Im a bitter man
"As to fundamentals" meant to say technicals.
QE. Just read the account of 'Awesome Oscillator buy signals '. Just goes to show that you need a big bowl of peanuts to pay these professionals. Don't think the oscillator could find his own ar@@hole. Just my opinion, but if you were 10% down, you may have your own thoughts on oscillation.
QE, I didn't ask about the turkey meals but the landlord of one of my locals (a Greene King pub) said business was well up on last year over xmas, however my little but affluent patch of Scotland 20 miles outside Edinburgh may not be representative of the country. Nervousness across the sector over the last couple of days may be due to the first of the updates on the sector due from MAB tomorrow. I'm not sure a few haggis bon bons will help. As to fundamentals, whats wrong with a simple RSI? It's been flashing overbought on GNK for a couple of days. I'm invested in the sector but elsewhere. Londoner7
Just because I fell out with the top management over the shareholder discount vouchers in the summer doesn't mean they will not have sold a few turkey meals over the festive season though not to me personally as I went to Miller and Carter etc. Trading up date due on Burns's day. If you can get the Carrick to do a few haggis bon bons, I might be tempted back. Have a swatch at this https://www.concordregister.com/greene-king-plc-gnk-l-ao-signal-trending-upward/ lol
Date is today...
Not as good a choice at the moment (at the moment) as MARS in this sector but longer term (one year) it will be ok...but by then the shorters will have made their money and bought shares on the cheap. Needless to say, the long term holders will be calmly sipping their beer and letting the market get on with it!
Maybe gearing up for the big rise tomorrow.
Maybe gearing up for a big drop tomorrow.
Liberum say that Greene King's current valuation appears to price in a 15% downgrade in earnings, which appears "overly pessimistic" ahead of its trading update on Thursday. Liberum keeps a buy rating.
Looks like shorters want this sub 500 prior to results and dividend. The way it is looking, I think they will get their way.
Going up on the back of the latest report by Young &Co I suspect. What a positive note they strike...... "The pub is still the go-to place in Britain for drinking and eating out and, while much has been written about the challenges facing the pub industry, we believe that providing customers with well-invested pubs, a quality offer and outstanding customer service is key to our success." GNK please note!
30 November interim results. https://www.greeneking.co.uk/investor-centre/financial-calendar/
Anyone know when the next update will be ? Nice to see us rising slowly.
The country needs to invent another sport that we can be good at (for a while) and fills the pubs up with spectators.
Finally broke past 543.50 after 10 days of not getting past it !!!!
after the qualifier the other night .... won't get out of the group stages
