The first service station in the world paved with Gipave graphene enhanced asphalt was inaugurated in Rome on 29 September. This is a latest-generation additive developed to ensure more durable, safer and more sustainable road paving. And this “polymeric super-modifier” is a 100% Italian product: it was developed by Bergamo-based company Iterchimica. The company specialises in additives for asphalts and was founded in 1967 and operates today in more than 90 countries. A three-year research and development process involved collaboration with University of Milan Bicocca for life cycle analysis, G.Eco (A2A group) for the supply of hard plastics and Directa Plus, which supplied the graphene.
Graphene comprises a layer of carbon having the thickness of a single atom (mono-atomic) isolated in 2004 by physicists Andrej Geim and Konstantin Novoselov at the University of Manchester, winners of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 2010 for their discovery. This extremely thin, transparent, waterproof, resistant and versatile material has opened up new horizons for nanotechnology.
Gipave contains graphene and a specially selected recycled plastic, which is currently not included on the recycling chain but destined as waste-to-energy plant. The main advantage provided by this additive, as confirmed by tests carried out so far, is the higher resistance of the asphalt to loads and thermal excursions alike. This paving is therefore less likely to suffer from potholes and will last longer, with safety benefits and reduced maintenance costs.
All the more, from an environmental point of view, paving with Gipave will ensure the recycling of a specific type of hard plastic which can then also be 100% recycled in subsequent production cycles, with savings on raw materials and lower carbon dioxide emissions.
The service station inaugurated along Via Ardeatina, in Rome, is owned by Q8 and have a total area of 2,000 square metres. Paving work was carried out by Rome-based company A.S. Appalti Stradali. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Federica Giannattasio, CEO of Iterchimica. The company is owned 90% by her family and the remaining 10% by Vito Gamberale, who is Chairman of the Board.
“This technology was entirely developed in Italy. It makes it possible to install high-tech, green and extremely resistant road paving with economic savings and a reduction in CO2 emissions into the atmosphere,” said Giannattasio. One tonne of recycled plastic was recycled for the service area; estimated suggest that avoiding incineration of this material saved about 82 kg of equivalent CO2. In addition, increasing the effective life-span of the paving may well reduce pollution emissions by up to 70%.
In this instance, Gipave was used for first time in a service station, having previously been involved in ten field tests in Italy – for example, taxiways for Rome-Fumicino and Cagliari-Elmas airports – as well as abroad, in Curbridge and Dartford, UK.
Thanks itsyou, that's great news about the Gipave as it appears to confirm that the Kent trail results verify the claims from Iterchimica/Directa. Gipave has the potential to be very profitable for Directa Plus if it takes off.
BTW, there's some great other trials that are being carried out under the Live Labs programme, which is funded by the Department of Transport. I like the Suffolk one(not related to Directa in any way)

This webinar will present the findings of a trial of Gipave – a Graphene enhanced asphalt product – as a new alternative resurfacing material in Kent. Kent County Council, as part of a Live Labs trial is exploring the use of Gipave on their highways network. This has the potential to offer significant gains in strength and lifespan over current methods in use throughout the UK.
The enhanced asphalt is produced by Iterchimica – a company based in Italy, who use Graphene pellets melted into bitumen to create an asphalt material that has been shown to deliver a ~150% improvement in the lifespan of the road material compared with traditional methods. The material cost of Gipave is circa 30% higher than normal asphalt, however this is offset by the savings of the life-time maintenance costs of the road – with the total lifecycle cost modelled at a 22% saving compared with traditional materials. Gipave can be linked to a wide range of strategic benefits for the county of Kent. "

All looks good in writing , SP still in decline. I would have thought the bridge completion would have had some impact re Gipave but nadda , not good. This share is becoming a big disappointment in my portfolio. Even if it stayed steady I could be happy and wait for the good news , but it would seem people are losing patience with it and taking the small monies invested to buy more lucrative stocks. I do intend to hold but jeez what a boring hold.
The works involved the flooring of the new service station for a total area of ??2,000 m2 and involved the use of graphene-based supermodifier for the binder (7 cm) and wear (3 cm) layers. The production and laying of the bituminous conglomerates were carried out by the Roman company As Appalti Stradali, the contractor. For this single service area it was possible to recover 1 t of recycled plastics otherwise destined for waste-to-energy. Thanks to the lack of incineration, a saving of about 82 kg of CO2eq was therefore estimated. Furthermore, the increase in the useful life of the pavement with Gipave, compared to one with bitumen as it is, will allow a further reduction of CO2eq emissions by up to 70%.

Thanks to a high-tech additive based on made in Italy technology, the flooring will be more durable, safe and eco-sustainable
(Rinnovabili.it) - Graphene asphalt continues to make its way to Rome. After the tests at Fiumicino airport , the innovative blend paved the 2,000 square meters of the Q8 service station, inaugurated today on Via Ardeatina. A world first that is identified with a very specific name: Gipave .
Gipave is the supermodifier based on graphene and "hard" plastics (those that are not normally included in the recycling chain) developed by Iterchimica . From 2018 to date this patented technology has been used in ten test fields both in Italy and abroad. And it is the same that the company donated for the 1,067-meter-long road surface of the new Genoa San Giorgio bridge.
What is special about the new graphene asphalt? All the tests carried out so far by universities and certified laboratories have confirmed excellent results in terms of the performance of the blend. The data on the road validate the increase in resistance to load cycles and the ability to withstand thermal excursions, demonstrating that the technology used allows to improve the parameters relating to the rutting (defect connected to areas stressed by frequent passages of high loads). The greater resistance therefore allows to obtain floors that last longer than those traditionally built.
At the heart of innovation is the circular economy . Gipave contains, in fact, G + Graphene Plus , a specific type of specially selected recycled plastic and a functional base studied by Iterchimica. This recipe allows the asphalt to be 100% recycled in subsequent production cycles , saving raw materials and reducing CO 2 emissions .
"Gipave - reads the press release - is the result of a three-year research conducted by Iterchimica in collaboration with the University of Milan-Bicocca, G.Eco (A2A group) and Directa Plus. The graphene used comes from by the Directa Plus company listed on AIM in London, while the G.Eco company supplied the hard plastic component. The University of Milan Bicocca instead took care of the entire environmental analysis (LCA - Life Cycle Assessment) ".
To pave the Q8 service area, 1 ton of plastics was recovered otherwise destined for waste-to-energy. " Having shared with Q8 this test that uses our Gipave technology to create the first graphene service station fills us with pride - commented Federica Giannattasio, CEO of Iterchimica - To evaluate the effectiveness of pavements made with asphalt containing the graphene additive we have already carried out ten test fields in Italy and in the United Kingdom, obtaining excellent results. It is a technology entirely made in Italy that allows to create high-tech, green and highly resistant flooring with economic savings and a reduction of CO 2 in the atmosphere ".
