Definition of 'European Community'

The main institution of European unity, formed out of the European Atomic Energy Community in 1967.

Its title changed to European Union (EU) in 1993, and was started by six founder members Belgium, France, West Germany, Italy and Luxembourg.

Denmark, Ireland, the Netherlands and the UK joined in 1973, Greece in 1979 and Portugal and Spain later in 1986.
