Definition of 'European Coal and Steel Community'

A Europen body which has been in existence since 1952, with the aim of establishing a common market for coal and steel.

This involved removing tariffs and restrictions on trade in these goods between its members, and also provided regulation on mergers and restrictive practices.

In 1958 the European Coal and Steel Community merged to become the European Economic Community.
