The first direct train transportation from China to Georgia has just been performed. TAC Express (Trans Asian-Caucasian Express) freight composition was loaded on 29th of January and was discharged in Georgia on 6th of February. The project is carried out by WELL (Worldwide Energy Logistics Ltd.) and Kedentransservice in close cooperation with Georgian and Kazakhstan Railways and with the support of Xinjiang province of China. This creates a new route from China to Georgia and through Georgia to Europe and the countries of Mediterranean basin.
The project provides an alternative to an already existing sea route. The new route is more time-efficient and while previously the cargo from China was delivered to Black Sea in 40-45 days through the Sea route, the path which is now available offers to transport the cargo in only 9 days.
Currently, the companies are working on the assignment of a regular block-train to the direction, which would be available on a weekly basis for the cargo owners, providing them with time efficient and reliable source of transportation.
The success of the project can potentially bringGeorgian railway and Georgian ports about 60-70 thousand TEU annually only from China, providing an additional USD 100-120 million for the Georgian economy. The near completion of Baku-Tbilisi-Kars rail line should double these figures by creating a direct rail route to and from Turkey.
