Ultrasis - Insomnia research project.

Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) grant for research into the use of cCBT with online social networks and mobile technology for the treatment of Insomnia.

Ultrasis, the provider of Interactive Healthcare and associated services, is pleased to announce that it is a major participant in a consortium which has been awarded a research grant of £463,000. The grant has been awarded in response to a bid submitted by the University of Lincoln.

The two year project, starting in June 2010, is entitled 'Exploiting Social Networks to Augment Cognitive behavioural Therapy' (ENACT). It will concentrate on the development and enhancement of a cCBT (computerised Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) package for the treatment of Insomnia using the engaging power of online social networks, social computer games and mobile technology.

ENACT is a timely response to the further development by the Department of Health of cCBT as a means of achieving improved access to psychological therapies (IAPT).

Nigel Brabbins, Chief Executive of Ultrasis said "We are delighted to be working with such a prestigious team on research that will identify ways of engaging people using mobile technologies and social networks in the successful delivery of cCBT for the treatment of Insomnia. It is also recognised that insomnia is a common symptom of depression and that disturbed sleep is one of the earliest symptoms of mental ill health, where early intervention may be beneficial."

The research team includes:

Dr Shaun Lawson, Director of The Lincoln Social Computing Research Centre

Prof Kevin Morgan, Director of the Clinical Sleep Research Unit within the Sleep Research Centre at Loughborough University.

Prof Niroshan Siriwardena, Foundation Professor in Primary Care at the University of Lincoln and a part time general practitioner. His research focuses on quality improvement in primary care, specifically improving management of sleep and common mental health disorders using complex interventions.

Dr Kate Cavanagh, Senior Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Sussex and Programme Director for the MSc in Foundations of Clinical Psychology and Mental Health.
