Press Release

Surgical Innovationsβ„’Β Group plc

("SI" orΒ "the Group")

Entry into veterinary market

Surgical Innovationsβ„’Β Group plcΒ (AIM:Β SUN), the designer and manufacturer of innovative surgical devices,Β isΒ delightedΒ to announceΒ theΒ successΒ ofΒ itsΒ first veterinary laparoscopicΒ procedure, which wasΒ carried outΒ by leading veterinary surgeonΒ Romain PizziΒ for the first timeΒ onΒ a reindeer at Edinburgh Zoo,Β using the Group's specialist instrumentation.

Β

Commenting on the surgery, Graham Bowland Managing Director of Surgical Innovations Limited, said: "The veterinary market represents a significant opportunity for SI. It is estimated that approximately one in two UK households are pet owners. Veterinary surgeons perform an average of 600,000 open abdominal procedures every year, but it is believed that only 1% of vets currently practice laparoscopic surgery. We are working closely with the UK's leading vets and organisations including the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland and Ark Surgical, the UK's fastest growing veterinary distributor, to educate the veterinary community of the benefits of laparoscopic surgery. By providing the right instrumentation we hope to enable UK vets to introduce laparoscopic techniques as part of their standard operating procedures."

Β

OpenΒ abdominal surgeryΒ is currently the standard procedure in animals; however thereΒ areΒ aΒ number of negative factorsΒ associated with it includingΒ more post-operative pain, a higher risk of post-operative complications and infectionsΒ and a longΒ recoveryΒ period.Β The minimally invasive nature of laparoscopic surgeryΒ significantly reducesΒ post-operative painΒ andΒ the risk of infection,Β which meansΒ the recovery period isΒ fasterΒ andΒ theΒ animal requires reduced post-operative care.Β For veterinary surgeons laparoscopic surgery offers better visualisation of the operated area, allowing them to be more precise and reach areas that are difficult to see in open surgery such as the liver andΒ theΒ pelvic canal.
