NEWCASTLE BUILDING SOCIETY ANNOUNCES THE APPOINTMENT OF A CHAIR AND DEPUTY CHAIRMAN

Newcastle Building Society today announces the appointment of a new Chairman and Deputy Chairman following the retirement announcement in April of the current Chairman Chris Hilton, after nine years in the post.

David Holborn, who has been a member of Newcastle's Board since 2003 and has held the role of Senior Independent Director, will take over the role of Chairman after Mr Hilton's planned retirement on 31st December 2010.

Mr Holborn, 63, originally from Lincolnshire but has lived in the North East region for the last 16 years, is a former director for Lloyds Banking Group Northern region and has been a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Financial Services for 12 years and is a past president of both the Bournemouth and Newcastle upon Tyne centres.

In addition to this, Ron Mc Cormick has been confirmed as the Deputy Chairman, having been a Non-Executive on Newcastle's Board for more than three years. Mr McCormick has held positions of both Group Finance Director then Group Commercial Director at Skipton Building Society until December 2005. He advises businesses within a range of sectors and has previous experience in KPMG.

Chris Hilton, departing Chairman at Newcastle Building Society, said: "After nine years as Chairman I was determined to ensure the Society benefited from a smooth and effective transition. I have worked with David on the Society's Board for more than seven years and have first-hand experience of his knowledge and passion for Building Societies, our business and its future success. His experience within the financial sector has involved Senior Executive roles, such as being a Board member for the Lloyds Banking Group's National Retail Board, so he brings very considerable experience to the role.

"Additionally, the appointment of Ron as Deputy Chairman is a sound move given his experience within the financial sector and his understanding of our business. Both gentlemen take up their roles from 1st January, which enables us to have a thorough handover period and ensure continuity. These are significant appointments for the Society and I wish them and the Society every success in the future."

In addition to this, Ann Cairns joins the Society as a Non-Executive Director. Ms Cairns has 23 years of experience in banking, including COO of Citibank's e-business and CEO of ABN Amro's Transaction Banking Business.
