INTERSERVE TO PROVIDE £50m FM AS CONSORTIUM IS NAMED PREFERRED BIDDER FOR ALDER

Interserve, the international support services and construction group, is to provide facilities management services worth £50 million in the new Alder Hey children's hospital to be created in Liverpool. Its consortium with John Laing and Laing O'Rourke has been named preferred bidder for the PFI contract by Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust; Interserve will provide 20 per cent of the consortium's investment in the project.

The new hospital will be built next door to the current site. Once the building is constructed the existing Alder Hey will be demolished and turned into a replacement park. The hospital will have 270 beds, including 48 critical-care beds for patients in the intensive-care, high-dependency and burns units. There will be six standard wards, each of which will have two four-bed bays and 24 single rooms. The design will also ensure that the majority of bedrooms have park views and that patients will have easy access to play areas on and outside their ward. There will also be 16 operating theatres, four for day-case surgery and 12 for inpatients.

The project is expected to achieve financial close in winter 2012 and the official opening of the new hospital is planned for summer 2015. At this point Interserve will be responsible for maintaining the hospital for a period of 25 years.
