("Gulf Keystone" or "the Company")
SUCCESSFUL TEST OFΒ HBH-6Β WELL,Β ALGERIAΒ AND OPERATIONS UPDATE
Gulf Keystone PetroleumΒ LtdΒ (AIM: GKP), an independent oil and gas exploration company with interests in Algeria and Kurdistan, is pleased to announce that drillingΒ and testingΒ of theΒ HBH-6Β appraisalΒ well on the Hassi Ba Hamou Permit ("HBH Permit") inΒ AlgeriaΒ has been completedΒ and to provide an update on operations.

Algeria
Hassi Ba Hamou
TheΒ HBH-6Β appraisalΒ well, which was spuddedΒ onΒ 25Β NovemberΒ 2008,Β reachedΒ a total depth ofΒ 930Β
metresΒ penetratingΒ the Devonian age gas reservoir.Β During aΒ 48 hourΒ production test a stabilised flow rate ofΒ 15,345Β cubic meters per hour (12.97Β mmscfg per day) was achieved through aΒ 144/64-inch choke.Β The HBH-6 wellΒ isΒ the sixth and final well on the HBH Permit during the first prospecting period and completes the work commitments during this phase.Β
The drillingΒ rig will now move to drill wellΒ RM-2Β which will beΒ theΒ first wellΒ on the HBH PermitΒ to be drilledΒ during theΒ secondΒ prospecting period.Β This well is expected to spud within a month.Β No further announcement on theΒ RM-2Β wellΒ is plannedΒ until the well has been completed.
The HBHΒ Permit, which contains the HBH gas fieldΒ and RM-1 discovery, was awarded inΒ AprilΒ 2005. It comprises five blocks within an area of 18,380 square kilometres in theΒ BecharΒ BasinΒ inΒ Algeria'sΒ
WesternΒ Desert.
GKN and GKS Field
As previously announced the GKN-1Β wellΒ was shut-inΒ inΒ early June 2008 in order to facilitate maintenance, repair and a spur line extension to the oil transportation line, workover of the GKN-1 well, and upgrade of the facilities to handle expected increased production when the GKS-2 well is brought onstream. Currently this work is pending agreement with Sonatrach (Algeria's National Oil Company) and approval from the authorities inΒ AlgeriaΒ to recommence oil production.
DuringΒ the second half ofΒ 2008Β Sonatrach entered into aΒ oneΒ yearΒ evergreenΒ agreementΒ to purchaseΒ GulfΒ
Keystone'sΒ share of production from the GKN and GKS fieldsΒ (60% interest). This agreement covered production fromΒ 10Β October 2007. The first paymentΒ covering production toΒ 10Β April 2008Β was received inΒ earlyΒ January 2009 being settledΒ in accordance with aΒ formulaΒ reflecting the prevailing price for theΒ monthΒ of NovemberΒ 2008.Β A further payment covering production between 11 April and early June 2008 is expected inΒ February 2009 andΒ willΒ reflect the prevailing price for the month ofΒ JanuaryΒ 2009.Β
In the interim results for the six months endedΒ 30 June 2008, issued onΒ 25 September 2008, the Company recognised revenues of $4.3 million in connection with this contract. The subsequent agreement with Sonatrach has resulted in a lower oil price being obtained for much of this supply due to falling world oil prices. As a consequence, the revenue reported will need to be restated at a number reflecting the prevailing November and January prices when known.
The GKN and GKS field are located inΒ North Algeria,Β SouthΒ EastΒ ConstantineΒ Basin.Β
Kurdistan,Β Iraq
Shaikan
Β
The highly prospective Shaikan Block is situated near the city ofΒ Dihok, approximately 85 kilometres North-West of Erbil and covers an area of 283 square kilometres. Shaikan was covered in 2008 by 171 kilometresΒ of 2D seismic and analysis of that seismic data has already resulted in a first ready to drill prospectΒ being identified by the Company.
A drilling rig has been contracted with Weatherford Drilling International (BVI) Ltd. The new build NOV IDEAL 1500HP rig isΒ nowΒ expected to arrive in country before the endΒ ofΒ FebruaryΒ of this year with a target date for the commencement of drillingΒ byΒ early second quarter 2009.
The acquisition of a well head and casing is complete with long lead items now in stock at our pipe yard near Maraiba,Β Kurdistan. In addition,Β preparation of the Shaikan-1 drilling site is complete.Β Contracts for ancillary well site servicesΒ have either been signed orΒ areΒ pending finalisation.
Akri-Bijeel
Β
The Akri-Bijeel Block is adjacent to the Shaikan Block and covers an area of 889 square kilometres. Acquisition of 442 kilometres of 2D seismic was completed in AugustΒ 2008Β and processing of the seismic data is underway. It is intended to drill the first Akri-Bijeel well following completion of Shaikan-1 using the same rig.
Mr.Β Todd Kozel, Executive Chairman, Gulf Keystone,Β commented:Β
"We are delighted with the result of the HBH-6 appraisal well on the HBH Permit,Β Algeria. This is the fourth successful well from our now completed six well drilling programme, which included the RM-1Β discoveryΒ to the southeast of the HBH gas field. TheΒ successΒ of this drilling programmeΒ justifies our decision to proceed toΒ the second prospecting period early,Β and underlinesΒ the high prospectivity of the HBH Permit.
"This early success is also a welcome start to what I expect to be a busy drilling year for Gulf Keystone. We continue to make rapid progress in bothΒ ofΒ our key areas of operation and eagerly anticipate the start of phase two drilling on the HBH Permit, and our first exploration well on Shaikan Block,Β Kurdistan."Β
