New 5G Contract Award

Filtronic's Morpheus X2 product enables significant breakthrough in 5G backhaul communications for the telecoms infrastructure market

Filtronic plc (AIM: FTC), the designer and manufacturer of products and sub-systems for the aerospace, defence, telecoms infrastructure, space, and critical communications markets, is pleased to announce a new contract win with a leading global provider of 5G telecoms infrastructure equipment.

The initial production contract, valued at $1.1m (£0.9m), is designed to facilitate the global launch of a product that significantly extends the range of E-band point to point radio by providing an additional 3 decibel-milliwatts of linear output power. In practical terms this increases the line-of-sight transmission distance of an existing outdoor unit ("ODU") within a mobile base station up to 12km, a distance that would normally require multiple repeater stations, or more typically the installation of an optical fibre cable. The initial Morpheus X2 production order will be shipped in FY2024, with further production volumes forecast in FY2025.

The Morpheus X2 high power module was developed rapidly in only six months using Filtronic's proprietary, next generation, power amplifier chipsets, combined with innovative packaging technology and the established Filtronic in-house hybrid manufacturing capability. This breakthrough, facilitating improvements to range and backhaul capacity in 5G infrastructure, is enabled from the intellectual property belonging to Filtronic. The product can be customised to meet the needs of different radio and ODU manufacturers.
