British Gas confirms Alpha CHPΒ product testing successfully completed
Ceres Power announcesΒ the successfulΒ design, build andΒ testing ofΒ 1kW grid-connected Combined Heat and Power ("CHP") productsΒ meeting all of the deliverables under the Alpha phase of the CHPΒ programmeΒ in conjunction with British Gas.Β This important milestone has been achieved within the timescale set out in the roadmap presented at Ceres Power's CHP update with British Gas on 24th June 2008.
Β
TheΒ grid-connectedΒ 1kWΒ CHP productsΒ wereΒ testedΒ on mains natural gasΒ under representative residentialΒ operatingΒ conditions,Β meetingΒ mostΒ of a typical home'sΒ electricity requirementsΒ as well asΒ exporting andΒ importing power toΒ and fromΒ the grid as required.Β Β The Ceres CHP product integrates the Company's 1kW Fuel Cell Module with all of the ancillary boiler components into a single unitΒ meetingΒ all of theΒ home's hot water andΒ centralΒ heatingΒ requirements, thereby avoiding the need for a separate boiler.Β The wall-mountable CHP productΒ usesΒ the same natural gas, water and electricity connections as existing boilers and hasΒ been designed for ease of installation, service and maintenance.
During theΒ triallingΒ conductedΒ inΒ the Alpha phase, key tests wereΒ witnessed andΒ dataΒ verified by British GasΒ and an independentΒ third partyΒ gas appliance testing company appointed by British Gas. AllΒ ofΒ the Alpha CHP productΒ requirements includingΒ performance, size,Β weightΒ and regulatory complianceΒ were successfully achieved. British Gas has issued anΒ acceptance certificate that triggersΒ the Β£2m Alpha milestone payment toΒ be paid toΒ Ceres.
The Company has already commenced theΒ designΒ and procurementΒ activities of theΒ BetaΒ phase of the CHP programmeΒ to produceΒ BetaΒ CHPΒ units for in-field trials,Β incorporatingΒ refinements arising from the Alpha phase testing.Β Β TheΒ fit-out of the new volume manufacturing plant in Horsham is well underway with initial operations scheduled to begin in H2 2009. The Company is on track to achieve market launch of the residential CHP product with British Gas inΒ H2Β 2011.
The CompanyΒ will provide the market with aΒ technicalΒ update including progressΒ of theΒ CHP programmeΒ at the announcement of its full year preliminary results in September 2009.Β
Gearoid Lane, Managing Director of British Gas New Energy, said:
Β "We are delighted that theΒ Alpha phaseΒ CHP product testing has been successfully completed and allΒ of theΒ agreedΒ deliverables have been completed on schedule. This significant achievementΒ underpinsΒ the potentialΒ mass marketΒ opportunity of the Ceres CHP product for the UK residential market."
Peter Bance, CEO of Ceres Power,Β commented:
"The successful completion of the Alpha phase is a very significant achievementΒ and we are now investing in the Company's operational capabilities to deliver the residential CHP product in volume.Β Ceres Power's fuel cell CHP product hasΒ the potential to make a material contribution to the development of a lowΒ carbon economy andΒ help the UKΒ meetΒ its climate changeΒ targets."
