BIOQUELL PLC
Interim Management Statement
BIOQUELL PLC ("BIOQUELL")Β (LSE symbol: BQE), theΒ UKΒ leader in specialist decontamination technology and testing/compliance services, announces its Interim Management Statement for the period fromΒ 1 July, 2008 toΒ 13Β November, 2008.
Financial position and performance of the Company
Group revenues in theΒ four monthΒ period between July 2008Β andΒ October 2008Β were in line with the Board's forecastsΒ notwithstandingΒ the move of BIOQUELL's headquarters and principal manufacturing facilitiesΒ to aΒ newlyΒ renovated building in August 2008.
Healthcare
The GroupΒ continues to see increased levels of activity from clients in the healthcare sectorΒ in theΒ UKΒ and overseas. Earlier this year the UK Department of HealthΒ ("DoH")Β set up and fundedΒ theΒ 'Showcase Hospital Programme'Β involving sevenΒ largeΒ NHS hospitalsΒ evaluating, among other things,Β BIOQUELL's in situ "proactive"Β serviceΒ whereby BIOQUELL proprietaryΒ hydrogen peroxide vapour decontaminationΒ equipment andΒ BIOQUELLΒ technicians are located atΒ eachΒ hospital to help drive down the infection rateΒ on a preventativeΒ basis.Β Feedback from the hospitals involved in theΒ ShowcaseΒ HospitalΒ Programme has been positive. In order to help facilitate the hospitals agreeingΒ detailed termsΒ with BIOQUELL relating to theΒ continuation of BIOQUELL'sΒ servicesΒ in these hospitals,Β the DoHΒ hasΒ nowΒ agreed to fund theΒ BIOQUELL proactive teamsΒ until the end of the year.Β BIOQUELL is now in commercial discussions with theΒ sevenΒ NHSΒ hospitalsΒ about theΒ continuationΒ ofΒ itsΒ proactive teams' servicesΒ from the beginning of 2009.Β In addition, BIOQUELL is in discussions with a number of other hospitalsΒ in particular in theΒ UKΒ and theΒ USAΒ aboutΒ buying theΒ BIOQUELL proactiveΒ service.Β
High quality scientificΒ researchΒ continues to beΒ generatedΒ which showsΒ that the use of BIOQUELL's technology can reduce the transmission of hospital acquired infection. For example, data were presented last month at the prestigious ICAAC medical conference inΒ WashingtonΒ DCΒ by a leadingΒ USΒ hospital whichΒ has been testing the efficacy ofΒ our technology against one particular "superbug".Β ThisΒ demonstrated that patients in intensive care units wereΒ 78% less likelyΒ toΒ obtainΒ that "superbug"Β in rooms that had beenΒ 'bioquelled'.
Detailed strategic planning work continues onΒ establishing the optimal wayΒ to rollΒ out BIOQUELL's technology in theΒ healthcareΒ sector internationally.
Life Sciences
In general terms,Β since the onset of the "credit crunch"Β the Group has seen a tightening of capital expenditure budgets amongΒ a few ofΒ BIOQUELL'sΒ life sciences' clients; however, this reduction in equipment purchase has beenΒ more thanΒ offsetΒ byΒ an increase in demand for RBDS, BIOQUELL's uniqueΒ roomΒ bio-decontamination serviceΒ which has good margins.
Other
BIOQUELL'sΒ research and developmentΒ workΒ continues satisfactorily, including the work being carried out for theΒ US Department of Defense's JMDS programme.
TradingΒ in TRaC remains satisfactory.Β
The Group's balance sheet remains strong - withΒ aΒ significant net cashΒ positionΒ -Β notwithstanding the purchase and renovation of a building inΒ Andover, Hampshire for the Group's headquarters and principal manufacturing facilities.
The Board remains confident of a satisfactory outcome for the year.
