GOLDΒ OILΒ plc ("Gold" or "the Company")
OPERATIONAL UPDATE
San Alberto-2X,Β Block XXIΒ OnshoreΒ Peru
The testing of the target zones encountered in the recent well has now been completed and the conclusion is that the wellΒ does not contain producible hydrocarbons.Β Both theΒ VerdunΒ reservoirs (Tertiary) that producesΒ gasΒ from the Tertiary in the Las Casita gas field in the neighbouringΒ block and the Palaeozoic,Β that produces oilΒ in the offshore San Pedro oil field,Β failed to deliver hydrocarbonsΒ despite both reservoirs having gas and oil shows whilst drilling and the logs showing the presence of hydrocarbons.
Following on from the San Alberto-1XΒ well drilled in 2006, where hydrocarbons wereΒ shownΒ on the logsΒ but due to mechanical problems it was not possible to recover hydrocarbons to the surface,Β the company decided to look for aΒ geophysical method of locating hydrocarbons. Seismic will give information on the Tertiary structures but is unable to penetrate below the top of theΒ Palaeozoic. Even with seismic one is essentially drilling the Palaeozoic "blind". TheΒ Company commenced with an electricalΒ process knownΒ asΒ "DNME"Β which identifies hydrocarbons as opposed to structures. A Russian company that has used this process successfully in theΒ Former Soviet Union (FSU)Β was commissioned to run theΒ DNMEΒ surveyΒ atΒ the same timeΒ asΒ a gravimetric survey was run.Β
The gravimetric survey showedΒ that the highest point ofΒ the main structureΒ wasΒ to the South West ofΒ theΒ San Alberto-1XΒ well butΒ the DNME survey showedΒ indications ofΒ "hydrocarbons", probably in the Palaeozoic,Β to the north-west of San Alberto-1X, albeitΒ lower on the main structure.Β Unfortunately,Β due to a village,Β it was not possible to run the DNME survey in the area where the gravimetric survey showed the "high", except for one small overlapping area. The decision was taken to go with the well location recommended by the Russian company.
Although the DNMEΒ and gravimetricΒ process is considerablyΒ cheaper than conventional seismic,Β the failure of the DNME survey onΒ theΒ San AlbertoΒ structureΒ means that the Company will have to relyΒ onΒ the gravimetric survey process as a reconnaissance tool to indicate where seismic should be shot toΒ delineateΒ aΒ structure, especially in the Tertiary.

The Palmero-1 well will be put on production in October on natural flow for approximately two months toΒ obtainΒ flow-rateΒ and pressureΒ dataΒ before deciding on the size ofΒ theΒ down-holeΒ pump required toΒ produce the well atΒ its optimum level.
Nancy, Burdine and Maxine Oil Fields, OnshoreΒ Colombia
The long awaitedΒ Environmental Permits (PMA)Β for the Burdine workoversΒ were finallyΒ approvedΒ and issuedΒ in August.Β An agreement has been reached with the local community and signed in early September.Β All this documentation now goes to the Ministry ofΒ theΒ Environment, the Ministry ofΒ theΒ Interior,Β theΒ Ministry of JusticeΒ and, within the region where the fields are located,Β theΒ Mayor of OritoΒ theΒ ProcuratorΒ of Putumayo,Β theΒ Defense of Orito and Corpoamazonia. All these organizations have to respond by the end of OctoberΒ after whichΒ operationsΒ can commence on theΒ wells.
Wellheads and tubing haveΒ been orderedΒ and a workover rig is currently being sought.
Rosa Blanca, OnshoreΒ Colombia
All the service contracts are being put in place and the drilling rig contract has just been let. The target date for spuddingΒ the first exploration wellΒ is December 1st.
The technical information contained in this announcement has been reviewed and approved by Mike Burchell, B.Sc., member of the SPE and with over 45 years experience in the oil and gas industry.Β
Speaking fromΒ Northern Peru, Gary Moore the CEOΒ said: "Β We are obviously very disappointed that the technology we used toΒ selectΒ the well location for San Alberto-2Β XΒ well did not work. This is by no mean the end of exploration in this block as weΒ haveΒ recently re-interpreted the logs from an untested well drilled in the south of the block some 50 years ago that shows good hydrocarbonΒ intervals. The current plan is to shoot seismicΒ over this structure, the large structure identified in the centre of the block and the San Alberto structure, followed by a three well exploration well programme.Β We are currently in the early stages ofΒ locatingΒ a workover rigΒ that isΒ capable of working over the Burdine wells, testing the Rosa Blanca well and drilling theΒ shallowΒ Block XXIΒ exploration wells"
