New ARC(R) VRaptor(TM)-Based Video Subsystems Receive Strong Industry Support

13 Aug 2007 07:46

ARC International (LSE:ARK) today announced that its new VideoSubsystems (see related ARC news release dated today) have garneredvery favorable reviews by a broad range of leaders throughout thesemiconductor industry. They include ARC partners such as CadenceDesign Systems, CoWare, Green Hills Software, Magma Design Automation, and Virage Logic. Industry analysts supporting ARC's new VideoSubsystems include widely recognized researchers from ForwardConcepts, In-Stat Microprocessor Report, Jon Peddie Research, andSemico Research. £ Industry Analysts Supporting ARC's New Video Subsystems: £ Will Strauss, Forward Concepts £ "In the mobile phone market, MPEG-4 and H.264 are preferred amongleading phone makers in Europe and Japan and ARC is providing thepreferred solutions for the sweet spot in this market. In addition, the new ARC Video Subsystems are exceeding the capability currentlyoffered by high-end $200 packaged silicon by providing SIMD engines inaddition to motion estimation, entropy encode and decode blocks." £ Tom Halfhill, In-Stat £ In her report, "MPEG Video ICs: H.264 in the Limelight," releasedlast month, Michelle Abraham, principal analyst at In-Stat, predictsthe MPEG video IC market has plenty of room for growth, with MPEG ICunit shipments expected to increase from 649 million in 2006 to 1.6billion in 2011. MPEG video ICs are used to compress and decompressvideo streams in many consumer devices, from small mobile handsets tolarge digital TV sets. "ARC is smartly moving into a growing marketthat demands more performance and power efficiency," said Tom R.Halfhill, senior analyst for In-Stat's Microprocessor Report. £ Dr. Jon Peddie, Jon Peddie Research £ "Shows like 'On The Lot' are an example of how inexpensivecameras, production tools, and Websites such as YouTube are enabling anew generation of Hollywood directors to distribute their creations tomillions of consumers. The new ARC Video Subsystems provide thefundamental building blocks to make higher quality video captureubiquitous on just about every portable media device, further fuelingthis hot new trend." £ Richard Wawrzyniak, Semico Research Corporation £ "ARC's new family of encoder/ decoder video subsystems representseveral steps forward for designers looking to use IP to craft theirnext silicon solution. Their very low power consumption coupled withhigh performance and very small die size make ARC's latest subsystemsideal to incorporate into next generation SoCs requiring high qualityvideo. In addition, their ability to function as the processingelement in many applications without needing to interface to a hostprocessor makes these subsystems even more attractive since they candouble as processors themselves performing computing functions otherthan just those specific to the target feature set." £ ARC Partners Supporting the New Video Subsystems: £ Cadence Design Systems £ "Cadence and ARC have been engaged in a close technicalcollaboration for the past two years under the Cadence Open Choice IPPartner Program," said Michael Horne, group director, IndustryAlliances at Cadence. "Our technical cooperation has resulted in theseamless integration of the Cadence Encounter digital IC designplatform with ARC's ARChitect processor configurator to the benefit ofour mutual customers, including advanced flow and methodology supportfor low-power applications. SoC designers working with the new ARCVideo Subsystems products can select the Cadence Encounter flow fromwithin ARChitect to achieve the highest performance and lowest powerpossible." £ CoWare Inc. £ "SoC design has become a daunting task for engineers because ofthe increased complexity," said A.K. Kalekos, Vice President,Marketing and Business Development at CoWare. Our solution to thischallenge is abstracting the complexity via SystemC models. We havebeen working closely with ARC to ensure its ARChitect tool produces aSystemC model of a customized CPU or multimedia subsystem thatintegrates seamlessly into our Platform Architect tool. Once imported,Platform Architect speeds the concurrent design of SoCs with embeddedsoftware. We're excited to be offering our customers the ability torapidly create and validate SoC designs based on the new ARC VideoSubsystems at the transaction level in SystemC." £ Green Hills Software £ "Green Hills has a long history supporting software developmentfor ARC cores and subsystems and we are delighted to continue thiswith the new ARC Video Subsystems," said Craig Franklin, senior vicepresident of advanced products at Green Hills. "MULTI debugger andIntegrated Development Environment drive the Metaware compiler. And,the Green Hills Probe, which is our JTAG connection device, ensuresthe software developer can access the hidden registers while debuggingembedded software running on complex system-on-chip designs." £ Magma Design Automation £ "As MagmaTies IP partner since 2004, ARC has worked closely withMagma to enable optimized reference design methodologies (RDM) for ARCconfigurable processors and subsystems using Magma's integratedRTL-to-GDSll design system," said Kam Kittrell, general manager ofMagma's Design Implementation Business Unit. "These RDMs enable mutualcustomers to design the highest performance, power-optimized SoCs in afully automated design environment, reducing design time and costs. Asa leading supplier of design implementation tools to portable andwireless system designers, we are pleased to strengthen thissupply-chain partnership as ARC expands its leadership in providinghigh performance, power efficient video subsystems for next generationmultimedia applications." £ Virage Logic Corporation £ "As the semiconductor industry's trusted IP partner, Virage Logicis pleased to support the new ARC Video Subsystems as part of ourongoing partnership with ARC to promote low power, performance-drivenSoC designs for multimedia applications," said Pete Rodriguez, chiefmarketing officer at Virage Logic. "We collaborate closely with ARC toprovide optimized cell libraries to enable the performance and powerefficiency required in today's complex, battery powered mediadevices." £ About ARC International plc £ ARC International is the world leader in configurable subsystemsand CPU/DSP processors that are used by semiconductor companiesworldwide to create system-on-chip (SoC) designs that provide astrategic competitive advantage. ARC's patented configurable productsare smaller, consume less power, are less expensive to manufacture, and provide a higher degree of differentiation over what can becreated using "fixed architecture" core alternatives. £ ARC International maintains a worldwide presence with corporateand research and development offices in California and Elstree, UK.For more information visit www.ARC.com.
