I would have thought that at the point they fell out of your ISA and into your trading account and therefore your entry into the realms of capital gains the acquisition cost at that point would be zero (the market value at that date) and therefore zero loss.

If this were to happen Russia would basically shut themselves out of the international markets as no sane investor would never feel their money safe in a Russian asset again. I still don't see legally how it can stack up.

It’s not uncommon for short selling to be halted during extreme turbulence. The UK did the same during the banking crash.

There are various ways to hedge - doesn’t have to be in BH. You could hedge by setting up CFDs in stocks that react positively to increasing interest rates for instance.

The can set up rates swaps and all sorts.

There are loads of ways to do it and none would need to be declared and they would be commonplace amongst HNW individuals.

If one of them was in a position to be rescued and could be picked up on the cheap then it would make sense.

I’m not so sure there would be a strong business case for a merger. What USP does either have that the other wants. They are too similar, cannot see a decent case for upstream or downstream integration.
