When half of you lot were starting out it were a quick splash of brut & a slow walk round corner to work, you could change your jobs daily if you wanted, employers even offered stuff like non-contributory pensions to get you to hang around. World's not like that any more guys. Zero hours contracts are here to stay they've allowed the service sector to fill the gap created by our ebbing manufacturing industries. Your more likely to be a barista than a panel beater these days so get used to it. I think zero hours are fantastic in conjunction with a decent minimum wage it provides a good entry point entry point into the work place & is certainly better than YTS etc in terms of renumeration for youngsters. Keep your head down, do a good job and they'll be a proper gig in it for you down the line, if it's not happening where your at go somewhere else opportunities are abundant & take your experience with you. Wish they had zero hours when I started work. Nottingham in the late 80's had FA.

Lifes a journey isn't it KK, my priorities have changed, I no longer have to provide for my family to the same extent ... I'm more interested in opportunities for the kids but that hasn't always been the case! If you live in the real world we're all on a similar timeline.

KK my original statement was its the unions that have killed UK manufacturing. I'm not saying the unions haven't changed or evolved or moderated their positions but it's too little too late at precisely the <br />time the first world went global. Traditional Labour areas with strong union traditions are the hardest hit. Why should employers fcuk around with unions anymore... Not necessary.

RR just announced 5,000 back office redundancies it's the middle management mediocrity usually first to go. I've got mates at RR with 10yrs service who can't get their lads into the firm at shop floor level, the only route in is via an agency. Unions have made it more difficult for the next generation is the overwhelming feedback. There is genuine animosity between the old guard who receive all the benefits & less time served employees who carry them.

KK, I don't disagree with you, as with almost everything in life there are a number of contributory factors. I do however know that there is still plenty of union presence in established Uk manufacturing mostly representing an ageing unmotivated old guard that have contributed to the movement of jobs abroad. Rolls Royce opening their plant in Singapore comes to mind. Apparently the Singapore earn nearly as much as the Derby lads but are more efficient due to lack af union presence and all the rediculous benefits that have been negotiated over the years. If your of a certain age at RR you get paid full time but only do 3 days a week & you get a final salary pension. Unions HAVE killed it for the next generation so If your gonna call get it right KK.

It's the unions that have killed manufacturing in the UK, the commie barstewads need fkin shooting... They've ruined it for the younger generation who have seen medium to high end manufacturing move to places like Singapore where they have an educated skilled workforce with no unions.
