Layla1 - fire IS a possible result of not tightening meter tails when fitting a meter, however, that applies to any meter, northing to do with smart meters (just a 'not so smart' meter fitter).
Personally, I don't have a smart meter, but, only because it wouldn't fit when they attempted to change it. And yes, having a smart meter does not change your consumption of electricity - switching thing off when not in use does. The idea, is that it's more visible when you're wasting electricity (as long as you're interested in checking).
As a kid, I used to like looking at the spinning ring that pre-digital meters had and trying to get it to stop by switching everything off - of course, things like the central heating clock, cooker clock (that we weren't allowed to touch) being permanently on, meant it would never completely stop. Of course we didn't have iPads or even Gameboys to occupy us then.
