The test has been developed by British start-up company iAbra and is about to embark on clinical trials in order for it to be certified for medical use.

The company said the test does not need to be administered by healthcare professionals and is repeatable, with each screening device capable of carrying out hundreds of tests per day.

The current gold standard polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests that are conducted in labs use swabs and need to be processed at different temperatures meaning it takes longer to get results.

Mr Holland-Kaye, chief executive at Heathrow Airport, said: “Testing for Covid-19 is the lifeline that the UK economy needs to get back on its feet.

“Currently the bottleneck is the availability of the Government’s preferred PCR testing labs – rapid point of care tests solve that problem.

“I have experienced iAbra’s test myself, alongside the PCR test – it is quicker and cheaper, and potentially more accurate.

“We urge the Government to fast track this technology to protect the economy and help save millions of jobs in this country.”

Virolens is a machine learning holographic microscope that provides a self-administered test using a single use cartridge. Heathrow has been trialling Virolens alongside two other solutions, swab and saliva solutions Geneme and Mologic.

It’s main advantage appears to be speed. The Virolens test takes just 30 seconds to administer, with perhaps a similar amount of time needed to check results and change the cartridge for the next test. By contrast, Geneme and Mologic take approximately 30 minutes and 10 minutes respectively to produce results, so the advantage in dealing with many more arriving air passengers is clear.

TT’s work was to design, develop and test the prototype Virolens screening device and to specify and design the manufacturing processes.

‘It is still fairly early in the process, with Virolens undergoing further trials alongside competing solutions’, said Numis analyst Richard Paige, but the situation is said to be developing rapidly.

EVA you probably know the answer to this.. I read a fair few posts today from yourself which helped make my decision to buy so thank you .. do you have an idea how long the trail may last if FDA approval is given? Is it 1, 2 or 3 years?

Hopefully, quite enjoyed the reading the posts on here from the past few weeks, thanks for the insights. I added just over £18k today. Sadkly I have toomuch in a couple of shares but will keep moving bits in when I can.

Looks and feels like another Avacta and SYN in the making. Was in Avacta from 40p up and in out of SNY too.
