Oil: A huge Moroccan-Russian refinery will be built in Nador
October 31, 2019
After two years of bankruptcy proceedings, the kingdom has just signed an agreement for the construction of a petrochemical complex in the north of the country.
A few years after the closure of Samir, the kingdom's only oil refinery, Morocco does not intend to remain idle. A new agreement worth two billion euros was signed Wednesday in Sochi between Morocco and Russia on the sidelines of the Russia-Africa Economic Forum.
According to the daily newspaper Al Massae in its Friday, October 25 edition, this agreement aims to build a new petrochemical refinery in northern Morocco, specifically in the city of Nador, where Russian technology will be used in the refining and storage of petroleum products.
The statement added that the refinery will be built in cooperation with Russian experts, who will provide their expertise, technologies, and efficient equipment to enable the Kingdom to assert its energy leadership on the African continent and internationally.
The new refinery, which will benefit from the port facilities of Nador, will initially have a refining capacity of 100,000 barrels per day, before reaching a second capacity of 200,000 barrels per day.
Al Massae also notes that MIA Energy is a company created a year ago by Rahal Boulgoute, CEO of Marita Group Holding, and Moulay Youssef El Alaoui, cousin of King Mohammed VI.
The MIA Energy press release states that the refinery project is part of an environmentally responsible approach. MIA Energy was quick to point out that the project in question will contribute to the creation of numerous direct and indirect job opportunities, particularly in the north of the kingdom, and will benefit from the equipment of the port of Nador, located in the west of the Mediterranean.
