We should hear more in the up coming update
A one off Special Dividend or more Buybacks ? depends on HSBC Share Price of course :-)
This from the FT August 2016.
"HSBC’s US business received approval for a dividend payment in 2017 as part of the plan it submitted for the Federal Reserve Comprehensive Capital Analysis and Review, or CCAR. It would be the first release of capital from the US business since 2007.
The bank plans to use a large part of that for a share buyback.
“It is a substantial number,” Iain McKay, HSBC finance director, said on the buyback. “It’s a big number that certainly [if we were] to get approval from the Fed in next year’s CCAR … conceivably could lead to another buyback.”
A strong core tier-one capital ratio has distinguished HSBC from its peers in Europe, most of which are considered weak by that gauge.
HSBC boosted its core tier-one capital ratio — a closely watched measure of financial strength — to 12.1 per cent, outpacing the rate that analysts had expected it to grow following the sale of its Brazilian business to Bradesco. It finished the first quarter with a core tier-one capital ratio of 11.9 per cent."
So according to the finance officer its "a big number", to me that sounds like billions :-)
