Norrbotten has two large mineral deposits for which two different companies applied for a concession. One concerns an iron ore mine in Kallak in Jokkmokk municipality, the other a copper mine in Laver in Älvsbyn municipality.
Growth and increasing prosperity in the world drive demand for minerals, and our welfare in Sweden is entirely dependent on the basic industry and exports that take place as a result of our natural resources, not least in northern Sweden. Of course, every exploitation involves an intervention in our environment. In Sweden, there is the know-how, technology and environmental awareness to mine minerals with as little negative consequences as possible. In addition, we have high working environment requirements and legislation that ensure our miners more comfortable conditions than the corresponding occupational group has in many other parts of the world. Thus, there are economic as well as social and environmental reasons to consider mining minerals in northern Sweden rather than elsewhere on earth.
However, I am aware that such decisions involve difficult balances between different interests such as reindeer herding and mining, natural values ??and economic values. I therefore have great respect that the government cannot easily decide on major exploits.
But now we have reached a limit. Both Kallak and Laver have been under preparation in the Government Offices for several years. The process before the cases ended up with the government for deciding has also been many years and involved with a number of different authorities.
That is why I would like to ask Business Minister Ibrahim Baylan:
When can we expect decisions in the two cases mentioned above?
