The Teesta River Protection Movement has announced a three-point program demanding the speedy implementation of the Teesta Master Plan.
A press conference was organized at 11 am on Thursday (October 3) in the seminar room of the Rangpur Chamber Building. At the press conference, the organization's chief coordinator, Principal Asadul Habib Dulu, announced the three-point program.
Asadul Habib Dulu said in his written statement that the Teesta Master Plan is a demand for the lives of about 20 million people in the Teesta basin. If this project is implemented, not only water management, but also agriculture, economy and people's livelihood will be secure.
He also said that a 48-hour sit-in program was held on both banks of the Teesta on February 17 and 18 covering 115 kilometers. Lakhs of people participated in it and expressed their support for the movement. At the conclusion, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman joined virtually and expressed solidarity with the movement.
Principal Dulu said that a public hearing has already been held at the Jagania Railway Bridge premises with the sincere initiative of the government and Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Advisor to the Ministry of Water Resources, has promised that the work on the first phase of the project will start in January 2026. The cost of the first phase of this 10-year project has been estimated at Tk 9,150 crore. Out of this, Tk 6,200 crore will come from a loan from China and the rest from the government treasury.
At this time, he announced a three-point program demanding the implementation of the project, a march and memorandum submission in 5 districts of Rangpur division on October 5. A mass procession and mass gathering at the upazila level on October 9 and simultaneous torch lighting in 10 upazilas along the riverbanks on October 16.
At the press conference, Principal Asadul Habib Dulu said, "We want the work on the Islamic Master Plan to start during the tenure of the interim government. The next government should maintain the continuity of this project. For this, it is urgent to ensure the allocation of funds in the next ECNEC meeting."
