The legacy of the 1964 Olympics very much lives on today. Many milestones were achieved, including major advances in the use of computers and communication satellites. The global impact of the hydrogen technologies to be demonstrated at the 2020 Olympics is likely to be equally momentous. In fact, probably even more so given that climate change has raised the stakes to an unprecedented level.

Hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games comes with a massive environmental footprint.

In fact, the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee believes that making the games sustainable can only be achieved if it intensifies its efforts to showcase green technology innovations to the world at a time when climate change is the prevailing reality.

“The climate change problem, that is to say cutting carbon emissions, is a top priority worldwide,” said Yuki Arata, senior director of sustainability for the Tokyo 2020 Games.

“The Paris Agreement starts in 2020 and the goal set forth is toward zero carbon. But as long as people live in a modern society, it is impossible to have absolutely no emissions of greenhouse gases. What’s important is being able to ascertain the GHGs we ourselves are emitting, and finding ways to avoid or reduce them,” she said.

The Tokyo Organising Committee released a sustainability operation plan on June 11, announcing its intention to work “Towards Zero Carbon” during the preparations for the games and when they take place.

Its ambitious plan, which seeks to contribute to the United Nations’ 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) addressing such issues as climate change, as well as sustainable consumption and production, calls for the maximum use of renewable energy sources during the games.

The committee intends to have all the electricity used at competition venues and the athletes’ village generated by renewables.

Pyrolysis Update

Further to the announcement of 29 November 2018, Altona (AIM: ANR) is pleased to provide an update on discussions with another holder of South Australian coal assets who is interested in applying pyrolysis technology to their project.

Altona has an exclusive licence granted by Leinad Ltd ("Leinad") to use its Pyrolysis technology in Australia and the People's Republic of China. Altona will be entitled to retain 95% of any revenues generated using this licence, the remaining 5% passing to Leinad (as announced on 28 August 2018).

Further discussions have taken place and the holder of the coal assets is very interested to progress this opportunity and has invited Nicholas Lyth, CEO of Altona, to Australia in early January. The purpose of these discussions is to identify the most advantageous way to utilise the pyrolysis technology with their coal asset to generate electricity for South Australia and to produce a framework of how a Joint Venture would work between the two companies.

Altona will also develop a plan for the potential sale of part of its coal assets in combination with the same pyrolysis technology.

Nicholas Lyth, CEO of the Company, said: "The economics of power generation using pyrolysis technology in an area of significant shortfalls in electricity generation are appealing. I was expecting the Olympics to be a showcase for fuel cells and hydrogen.

Aggreko has a proven track record in supporting high profile events including this year's PyeongChang Winter Olympics, Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, European Championships in Glasgow and Ryder Cup in France.

SMRT Taxis' private-hire arm - Strides - is partnering Toyota Tsusho to offer Singapore's first hydrogen fuel cell cars by as early as the end of the year. Strides, the private-hire subsidiary of SMRT Taxis, is tying up with the distribution arm of Toyota Motor to offer the first hydrogen fuel cell cars in Singapore as early as the year end. The cooperation with Toyota Tsusho will also see Strides making forays into regional markets such as Myanmar, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Japan. Fuel cell cars such as the Toyota Mirai have shorter refuelling times but cost four or five times more than petrol models SMRT Taxis Managing Director Tony Heng told The Straits Times yesterday that the first couple of units of fuel cell cars will arrive as early as the end of the year. He said Strides will start with the Toyota Mirai fuel cell model, and will explore other models such as those from Honda and Hyundai. If the plan materialises, Strides will be the first operator in the region to ply fuel cell vehicles. Fuel cell cars use hydrogen fuel to make electricity through a chemical process. The electricity powers one or more on-board motors. Unlike conventional battery-powered cars, which take hours to recharge, fuel cell cars take only five minutes to refuel. But each fuel cell car costs four or five times that of a conventional petrol car. A battery-powered car costs 1.5 to two times more. Mr. Heng said the tie-up is strategic as the Japanese company has a strong presence worldwide. Strides was introduced to stop drivers from migrating over to Grab and Uber In Yangon, Strides is starting up soon with five Toyota Alphards, and aims to have a fleet of 100 cars within a year or so. Strides was set up two years ago to stem the migration of drivers to private-hire alternatives offered by Grab and Uber. Mr. Heng said the firm now has close to 300 cars. Asked how much Strides had cannibalised SMRT's taxi business, he said, "The market has more or less stabilised now. But initially, we had 10 to 20 percent who migrated over to Strides. And for the limousine division, up to 40 percent." He said the growth potential is high, and he expects a taxi and private-hire fleet of 5,000 to 6,000 in the medium term. SMRT Taxis has about 3,000 cabs now. With Uber pulling out of the market, Mr. Heng said Strides is in a stronger position because of its close association with Grab. It uses the Grab booking platform and commuters can also use GrabPay to pay for rides. Mr. Heng said plans are afoot to make GrabPay available throughout its taxi fleet

Was looking at the website to look for other updates and noticed the following in the markets section. Wasnt sure if this piece on containerisation was new. I thought so but cant recall exactly what was there before. The product, which could be sized up to 1.2MWe across a containerised and modular system, is designed to be scalable dependant on customer specifications and is suitable for multi-megawatt installations.

Green Hydrogen and its Zero-Carbon Footprint

H2V INDUSTRY has chosen the electrolysis of water as the innovative method to produce green hydrogen. The electrolysis of water involves using electrical energy to separate water into hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O2), thereby converting electrical energy into chemical energy.
