Hmm... I always thought a Santa rally happened in the few days after Christmas but I could be wrong!

Sometimes I look at these posts and think does nobody read the news or between the lines. In the UK we have been told that the big 6 will get bailout/loan from the government to help with the gap between prices and the price cap. They are letting the little guys fail as normal they will bail out the big 6 because they have friends in high places.

@marcus_ it is very short sighted to say it worked. The social and economic changes required to a core of a country are unprecedented and unpalatable.

Hmm. China tried population control it has not gone to well in fact they have reversed it. The only way that will work is to start killing of people that have not saved enough money for retirement.

Wow, £25K that is a lot. It is really good to learn from people that have seen the bad times it always helps me to never get carried away. Although with RDS I cannot help but think that this will regain it's previous highs once the world gets back to normal. Although I also think RDS and other oil majors could be doing a lot more to transition away from oil.

I look to Companies like Google and Amazon they have there fingers in many pie's and some of these pie's are very different to what they came to market with originally. So with all the money companies like RDS generate why can they not experiment with things. Some might say they have been wasting opportunities to innovate for far to long by wasting cash on things like buy backs.

I have also sold today, again a good profit I also think there is no real guarantee that either of these bids will succeed so the down side is a major risk.

Yes I am holding and I am quite new to the game. Only started my Stocks and shares ISA in May last year. Still trying to understand how all this works. Your explanation is great thanks for that...

I think the Vaccines are not working well against delta. I even heard a report yesterday that delta could be considered a new disease. With all this in the media it does not bode well for oil or the world economy. Also I think OPEC are to quick to increase production there for it will be hard to go over a oil price of $75.

Any thoughts????

Hmm. I thought curve yield going up would be good for the banks but they seem to be falling along with the rest of the market. Any idea why?

Nice to see the price is still positive even on a ex dividend day.

Why does the drop occur on the ex-dividend day and not on the day the dividend is paid out? for investors that reinvest dividends this surely means they loose money if the share is higher by the time the reinvest.

Any idea what happened to the Mondi offer. Did i miss something have Mondi gone away?

Yes I agree... for the greens it is better to go after the big boys (e.g. Shell and the like) This creates more noise for the green agenda in the press. I do however fear that lending institutions trying to green there balance sheets may have an affect through the back door.

Taking a profit is no bad thing but the other scenario is that there is a bidding war that pushes the price higher. I will hold it is worth the risk.

Thanks for that explanation Poker chips that makes sense but I suppose I am just trying to find out what is the point of buying back the stock. I do however think I found found one reason. the Earning per share goes up making the dividend more affordable or even allow the dividend to increase. Please let me know if this is not right!

Hmm.. I do have sleepless nights but not over my investments. I do think in the next couple of years there is money to be made which is why I am invested in TLW but I am hoping to time my exit. I have more money invested in a bigger oil company which is also a gamble but I think has more profits and leeway to transition.

Hmm... this is a interesting questions and here is what I think. The main income for a bank for many years has been the difference between interest rates given to savers and received back from borrowers. Until this improves I think UK and European banks will have a problem getting to there true valuation.

Yes Barclays has a investment bank but try explaining that to Joe public. I think as far as Joe public are concerned Barclays is just another bank that makes it's money from lending.

I am hoping that is the case. I fear though the world governments are being forced down the road to stopping using fossil fuels quicker then they would like. I wonder if they can hold out under all that pressure. I think we will still need oil in 5 years time but less of it. If that is the case where the price will be will be any bodies guess.

I see what you are saying but would it not be better to achieve this by paying down debt. It just seems a waste especially if there is very little benefit to the share holder. I would much rather have a bigger dividend or hold the shares of a company with lower debt. There must be another reason for the buy backs maybe they are more tax efficient. I will do more reading at the weekend I think see if I can find out more.
