The Principal Commercial is focused on building a sustainable, high quality pipeline of copper exploration projects globally through land staking, sourcing and/or acquisition. Manages the process of evaluation, negotiation and execution of commercial agreements for Copper exploration including JVs, options, earn-ins and strategic investments.
The role manages the market intelligence generation/gathering process, provides constant monitoring of industry trends/ patterns emerging, understands and provides tracking/analysis on competition and sources new opportunities to impact BHP’s exploration and growth strategy.

Leads market intelligence process to monitor industry developments and trends; presents and communicates key insights to BHP’s exploration leadership team through Market intelligence presentations and reports
Manages the valuation process (identifying prospects, Organizationelling, commercial analysis, preparation of business cases, due diligence) through to project capture
Coaches specialist commercial on business skills and is seen as a strong resource to help build commercial acumen of others within exploration team
Leads the due diligence process required prior to execution of commercial agreements with 3rd parties and engages with compliance and legal
Represents BHP Copper Exploration in negotiations with counterparties as well as in industry conferences and events
Participates in negotiations with senior external stakeholders (counterparties – subject matters experts, CFO, CEO, VPs) to successfully capture high priority projects
Provides commerical expertise to stakeholders internally (country and generative teams) to identify high quality opportunities globally
Developes negotiation envelopes and tactics for the Investment Approval Requests where commercial arrangements are required
Supports the Head of Commecial in preparing the commercial strategy as part of the appraisal process which is presented to key BHP stakeholders (VP of Exploration, Copper Leadership Team and Minerals Americas Leadership Team)

Builds and maintains positive “value add” business relationships with commercial counterparties and industry players
Conducts engagement with country government agencies to understand regulatory famework requirements in new jurisdictions and provides information and insight to internal stakeholders
Ensures appropriate commercial risk (mineral title, fiscal, country risk and general commercial) overlays are completed to enable definition of priority new jurisdictions for copper exploration
Ensures that preparation, execution and implementation of commercial and exploration agreements complies with the agreement terms and conditions
