Road accidents are not uncommon in Malaysia. Every festive season, the number of accidents skyrocket, with a handful of them involving trucks. According to a study done by the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros), from 2007 to 2011, most crashes were caused by risky driving and fatigue. In fact, fatigue accounted for 9.9% of the crashes involving lorries and 7.9% of the crashes involving buses.
Seeing Machines, a technology start-up that emerged from the Australian National University, decided to come up with a technology that could intervene in such events. It developed an artificial intelligence-driven solution that tracks the driver’s eye movements and facial expressions for signs of fatigue and distraction to keep the driver safe on the road.
Max Verberne, general manager of aftermarket at Seeing Machines, tells Digital Edge that the solution, aptly named Guardian, was initially developed when the company saw a gap in the mining industry, as miners tend to succumb to fatigue on the job. Over the years, demand for the technology has grown, expanding to automotive, commercial fleets, rail and even the aviation industry.
