And not only is Qualcomm delivering robust solutions, but it is also expanding its auto ecosystem through partnerships and integrations with the likes of Amazon Alexa, Alps Alpine and General Motors. If you ask me, Qualcomm could soon be as ubiquitous in next-generation connected vehicles as it is in smartphones and tablets today. It pays to have a killer patent portfolio and licensing division.'

NTSB chair (and SEE's ally) Jennifer Homendy on Monday praised the new probe. She said the board has urged the agency to develop standards for drive monitoring systems and require automakers to "incorporate system safeguards that limit the use of automated vehicle control systems to those conditions for which they were designed."

'Curiously, NHTSA also notes that it will investigate just how Autopilot enforces driver attention to the Level 2 system, as required in fine print by Tesla, but at times ignored by those using it. NHTSA has investigated individual Tesla crashes in the past, but not on a macro level that could have implications for the system's continued use without sufficient driver-monitoring systems.'

However the NHTSA is leaving the path open to more crashes being included, as it looks into what went on with Autopilot and whether the situation matches any other similar incidents.

“The investigation will assess the technologies and methods used to monitor, assist, and enforce the driver’s engagement with the dynamic driving task during Autopilot operation,” the agency says. “The investigation will additionally assess the OEDR by vehicles when engaged in Autopilot mode, and ODD in which the Autopilot mode is functional. The investigation will also include examination of the contributing circumstances for the confirmed crashes listed below and other similar crashes.”

Autopilot is a Level 2 system by the generally-accepted SAE guidelines to autonomous driving. That means it’s driver assistance, not a self-driving car: the person at the wheel is still responsible for the vehicle’s operations. Tesla uses sensors in the steering wheel to track that driver engagement, though the amount of time you can remove your hands varies by situation.

The next step is likely to be the development of a new single box EROAD product with a combined RGB-IR internal facing camera and additional processing (eg Xilinx FOVIO FPGA or OmniVision ASIC) that provides the full suite of Guardian functionality in an EROAD product. Whilst the economics of the singly unified data feed are already expected to be highly attractive to customers, the development of a single box solution, which would likely take around 12 months, would clearly be a highly attractive and competitive product. With EROAD already having 170,000 connections compared to Guardian’s 31,771 (as at 30 June 2021), the strong growth from telematics relationships like this one with EROAD are clear and significant. We reiterate our Buy recommendation and 16p group valuation.

Hella’s business making power and battery electronics and radar sensors for advanced driver assistance systems would mesh well with Faurecia’s ambitions, Tom Narayan, an analyst at RBC Capital Markets, wrote in a recent report. In February, Hella completed the sale of its front camera software business to Volkswagen AG as part of what it called “stringent portfolio management,” while reaffirming its commitment to automated driving.

“Consolidation is likely for the legacy auto supplier space,” Narayan wrote, citing the shift to electric vehicles from internal combustion engines.
