RE: Why sell?17 Jun 2025 03:15
Trotsky - re your post yesterday at 17.31. Your last paragraph about not completely ignoring the current yield is spot on and is, arguably, actually the most important yield figure if you are focussed on obtaining the best return from dividends (so putting to one side the aspect of capital growth / total returns).
I may draw the ire of a few here but I think that if an investor bases investing decisions on ‘their yield’ figure then they will potentially be making decisions on flawed logic. I have seen quite a few posters across the boards who seem to advocate the use of ‘their yield’. Anecdotally, it seems to be used when share prices have risen so makes me wonder whether posters use that figure to subconsciously convince themselves they are good investors? Of course, they may well be - after all, the share has risen since their purchase!
For clarity, I am not against calculating a yield off the average purchase price (I do so myself)- it’s more about it influencing whether to sell, or not, a share.
