From a PI perspective I can see your point to an extent that it is not an absolute necessity although like threeputt says a well placed short on an index is a good hedging strategy when you have a long term view that you feel needs a little protection.
I think the large funds on the other hand, where they have many fingers in many pies ranging from equities in domestic and foreign markets, bonds, currencies etc then the value and importance of shorting increases exponentially.
Our psychology and learning path dictates a lot of how we invest / trade and for me personally the odd short (just to reiterate I am long here) compliments my personality / startegy well. If you have found a groove where shorts are not required then fair play my good man, by the sounds of it it's certainly working well for you :)
