George Frangeskides, Chairman at ALBA, explains why the Pilbara Lithium option ‘was too good to miss’. Watch the video here.
Damn it, just spat out a mouthful of tea reading this! :-> Absolutely hilarious, you really couldn’t make it up. Feeling smug that I called it. Utter jokers.
We will outclass such so-called competition many times over. One by one they will fall by the wayside with poor specificity, dodgy trials, limited manufacturing bandwidth. Trust me, we got this (excluding China).
This board has lost it’s MoJo. Can we have it back please?
Ignore Medusa, it is a sideshow. They won’t get any LFDs from Avacta for 18 months at least as all stock will be bought up by government(s).
I suggest people go back to reading the various RNS and understand what greatness we are on the verge of.
Avacta are prioritising quality over keeping to an exact timescale they estimated at some point previously. Happens ALL THE TIME on complex projects. I’ve managed a few myself. Being late doesn’t mean the result will be poor, often quite the opposite. We have a team who won’t let something out until it is right. Anyway, the delay is all about scaling up manufacture. AS has actually told us this.
Can we have more banter regards china / yanks / £50 by Christmas (deramp, sorry) and less bed wetting / stock basher feeding / not getting it please?
Read the RNSes...
Innovate UK don’t give out £1M on a whim. Be in no doubt, this is Moonshot funding pushed out through an existing legit channel.
Last time I looked at Innovate UK, the company have to match the received funding one for one. £2M buys you a lot of new functionality on an app that already exists.
Seems very uncertain:
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/sep/17/nevada-reinfection-case-highlights-mysteries-covid-19
“Most of our vaccines do not do better than natural infection in terms of protection.”
Our son’s swimming teacher asked why we were not resuming his sessions. Mrs (Dr) RR’s response:
“ Hi #######,
No, not at all - we are exercising caution as the R number is rising. We have family who are shielding. We know healthy, young people who contracted Covid in March and are still ill in September. We follow the Independent Sage’s scientific advice, rather than the government’s, and so are continuing to avoid non essential activities until effective track and trace and high speed and widespread testing (ie within an hour) is introduced.
Best wishes,
#########”
I recommended she deleted the bit about going long on Avacta.
Stay safe peeps.
For anyone not on Twitter, Lennard is Project Delivery Lead for the UK National Lateral Flow Antigen Device testing program. Someone seriously needs to take him out for a pint (covid secure of course)
https://twitter.com/drlennardlee/status/1306114684165206017?s=21
“ Big problem- not enough UK COVID-19 tests. Now there is a 30 minute test, giving a result by the time you got to work. Even with a terribly dull name "lateral flow viral antigen detection", impressed there's so much positive interest in our extensive testing part of #moonshot”
Aside from needing someone to help you do the test (stood closer than 2m btw), this machine is brand new and has numerous moving parts. How long before they get jammed and need an engineer callout? I would say an hour given how new the design is.
Printers still jam and they have had decades of evolution of their design. This has had a few months. Speak to any mechanical engineer. Designs need time to evolve. Run this this flat out in its 1.0 design revision and you have a recipe for disaster (i.e. a massive queue with no working machine and heathrow staff wondering what the F to do.)
This link includes some interesting discussion about what has to be put out in an RNS and when. My take on it is that GSK and Avacta could be in serious discussions and not need to RNS the fact.
https://www.fca.org.uk/publication/consultation/cp15-38.pdf
Jesus, what a crock. Can you imagine the queue while fully PPE clad airport staff try to explain how to do this to Covidiots and Gammons.
Does Dr Hilary have the Internet? Amazing how uninformed some people are.
Not suitable for home testing as needs equipment.
The steps required for this test put me in the mind of the chorus lyrics of: https://youtu.be/yZsbT867uEE
Move along, nothing to see here:
“ You take a swab from the back of your throat and up your nose. You then put the swab into the tube which has liquid in it and then leave it for a few minutes. You then take it out, put the test strip in and leave it for another few minutes. Finally, you take it out and if a red line appears then you've tested positive for Covid-19.”
I once worked at an engineering company where the MD took an unusual interest in the development of one particular new product. The project got all the money and resources it ever needed and was reported as a success at every possible opportunity. It had to be to avoid egg on the MDs face. The project had a golden ticket so to speak.
Boris just handed Avacta such a golden ticket.
Expecting a big re-rate over the coming days, hours and minutes ahead. Peston tweet alone will add 20p.
We could just have everyone get Covid then take an Antibody test to prove it. Problem solved right?
*faceplant emoji*
Sorry, this post adds nothing but can I just say:
BOOM TIME!
For all we know Cytiva are quietly taking the Affimer LFD into the US market.
Rich, I think you are right about an RNS on this. Just tidies it up.
I’m somewhat reminded of 2007 when Steve Jobs introduced 1 - A phone, 2 - An Internet Communicator and 3 - A widescreen ipod with touch controls. Actually it was one device, huge applause all round.
Is Avacta doing the same? Would be a brilliant piece of kit. Feeling unwell this winter. Is it Covid or Flu? Just one test to find out.
Covid-19 AND INFLUENZA!!!!

If you were a UK manufacturer of LFDs right about the start of the pandemic, you looked around at where the BIG order was going to come from. Well, clearly the order is going to come from the UK Government. UK money going into UK business.
So, you get yourself onto the UK-Rapid Test Consortium (UK-RTC). Maybe you even lead it. As time progresses it becomes increasingly clear you have made the right call. Government ministers are starting to talk to the media about mass testing.
At this critical moment, do you sign up to mass produce just whichever LFD device comes through the door? No. Do you pick one you like the look of? No. What you actually do is take a steer from UK Gov and CONDOR to make sure you are offering up your manufacturing capacity to the test that is about to receive the BIG government order.
Once you’ve signed away manufacturing capacity you can’t always take it back. The decision has to be right.
Avacta have signed up two members of the UK-RTC already, one of which leads it. This resonates with me as a highly bullish signal.
