Conflict in the Middle East has caused oil and gas prices to jump, but it may also lead to poorer crop yields and higher food prices if it continues to impact global shipping.

The continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz would lead to higher global prices of staples like corn, wheat and rice because the waterway is vital to shipping one-third of the world's urea - an essential ingredient in fertiliser, the chief executive of Yara has told World Business Express.

"In some crops, you could see reductions [of yields] of up to 50%," said Svein Tore Holsether, who runs the world's second-largest fertiliser company.

The timing of the closure means supply of urea is constrained at a time when farmers and growers are buying fertiliser to apply it to fields, he said.

Globally, about 180 million metric tons of nitrogen fertilizers are consumed each year (measured in nutrient terms). Of that, roughly 55 to 60 million metric tons of urea move through international seaborne trade annually. The Middle East accounts for approximately 40% to 50% of that traded volume.

That’s because the Gulf region is not just a major energy exporter. It is one of the world’s most important suppliers of nitrogen fertilizer—the foundation of modern agricultural yields.

Rare earth stocks should perform well as commodity prices rise amid the war in the Middle East. This puts pressure on gas and oil supplies, which in turn increases fertilizer prices. The start of the Russia-Ukraine conflict caused fertilizer prices to surge.

Harvest has notified Brazil's mining agency ANM of its resource. I sent an email to Strand Hanson last year and they didn't respond, but 1 week later Harvest put out an RNS.
