Kev,.if you want direct exposure from within your trading platform/ISA etc there are lots of gold and silver ETF on the market from the likes of Invesco and wisdomtree etc, check with your platform to see what they offer, a fair amount are synthetic. There are also ETCs which say fhey hold the underlying asset (apparently) and also Leveraged ETF's which aren't backed by anything other than paper contracts but offer a Leveraged exposure to futures
I use it as an insurance policy against wider market risk off events and would not recommend speculatively day trading it as it will completely do your head in as there are so many factors acting as a push and pull on the daily movements.
It was a safety trade for me from last week when the market contagion hit the the price has moved up inversely to the broader equity indexes
E.g
If you sold the FTSE 100 last week its gone down 7%.
Whilst gold has moved up 7%.over the past week
