That is what happened, although i dont think they were forced to hold anything. they were completely mismatched by duration (long assets vs short liabs) but to me the key point is what the long duration assets they were holding, i.e. bonds with an irr of 0.25%. buffet would not have approved.

But think about the mark to market losses forced on those 3 US banks. They also thought they were doing great until they had to sell their 'hold to term' investments at a huge loss.

just incredible that they were locking in interest rates of 0.25% over 30 years and thinking they were getting a bargain. where did they think rates were going?

@pineapple. I would suggest that the Marcus Johnson commission was excessive at 25% via Firstrand bank. The Hopcraft v CBG which was lumped into the same appeal, amounted to £183.60 capped commission.
