The Severnside Carbon Capture and Shipping Hub has revealed engineering consultancy Petrofac has joined the project.
In a statement, issued this week, the hub, which is shortened to 7CO2 and claims to be the UK’s first such project that will develop large-scale CO2 capture combined with shipping infrastructure, said Petrofac was developing its feasibility study.
Earlier this month the hub was launched with businesses in the energy-from-waste sector including such as Suez, Viridor, Bioenergy Infrastructure Group (BIG), Green Transition Holdings (GTH) the parent company of Varme Energy, FCC, Veolia, SSE and utility company RWE attending.
According to the latest statement, the hub aims to decarbonise the South West and South Wales industrial clusters.
Petrofac will work with Bristol Port, where the 7CO2 plans to develop a CO2 liquefaction and storage hub, which would be linked to regional large emitters “through both existing pipeline routes and by rail”.
Petrofac New Energy Services vice president Jon Carpenter, said: “This is an important project, which could achieve the removal of more than four million tonnes a year of CO2 from emitters in the region”.
7CO2 technical director Keith Birch, said: “Efficiency, process integration and deliverability are key. Petrofac brings the right mix of UK based expertise and a proven ability to deliver at scale.”
The development will allow many regional emitters to invest in carbon capture and storage plants to capture their emissions.
