PRESS RELEASE
Imbabura, December 11, 2018
According to the latest estimates, the Alpala deposit contains more than 10.9 million tons of copper and more than 23 million ounces of gold.
On Tuesday, December 11, the Deputy Minister of Mines, Fernando L. Benalcázar, and the Executive President of SolGold in Ecuador, Jason Ward, traveled with the press to the Cascabel mining project in the province of Imbabura, to see in situ the advances in the advanced exploration drilling in the Alpala copper-gold porphyry deposit, considered the largest in Ecuador.
According to the latest estimates, the Alpala deposit contains more than 10.9 million tons of copper and more than 23 million ounces of gold, which has been recognized by external consultants qualified as a Tier 1 deposit. Copper projects Level 1 are very rare and scarce, but contribute more than half of the world's copper production.
In Cascabel, 12 drilling machines are operating, dedicated to drilling wells up to 2,400 meters deep, which allow us to delimit the mineralized body and confirm the resources in the Alpala deposit.
Exploration works in this mining project currently generate more than 400 jobs, of which 98% are Ecuadorian.
Deputy Minister Fernando L. Benalcázar highlighted the investment generated by mining. "To date, the Cascabel project has invested 95 million dollars, of that figure, close to 51 million corresponds to the investment executed in 2018 and 70 million more are planned for 2019," he reported.
He also stressed the work of community relations that has stimulated the economy of the sector, generating direct jobs, as well as undertakings for the provision of supplies, food preparation, transport cooperatives, hardware stores, among others.
For his part, Jason Ward highlighted the potential of Cascabel to contribute to the development of the country, both for investment and for job creation and; the payment of taxes and royalties. "When the Alpala mine finally begins its construction, we estimate that more than 7,000 people will be required. It will be an underground mine and will be developed with the most advanced technology to minimize the environmental impact, "he said.
During the tour, the media visited the drilling platforms, the Alpala camp and learned first-hand how the water treatment and recirculation systems work in the company's operation, allowing 90% of the resource to be reused.
The National Government promotes mining in the country, hand in hand with responsible companies that operate with the best industry standards and comply with national regulations, without neglecting the community.
