With oil plummeting near an 18-year low amid unprecedented supply and demand shocks, Russia finally admitted: crude is too cheap.

There will doubtless be a shake-out amongst the shale oil companies, but, in a Presidential election year, Trump is likely to do what he can to help them.

The trouble with shale is that, if it stops drilling now, it can always start up again later, when the oil price is more attractive.

If the oil price remains low for quite some time, it is, presumably, investment in alternative energy sources that will suffer, because they will be less competitive.

But the Russians have the advantage of a flexible currency.
