"Ten-year energy crisis' ...15 May 2022 14:10
will do more than Cop26 for drive to net zero".
It's the title of an article on p9 of this morning's Sunday Times. Some quotations:
"It is becoming clear the energy crisis is not a blip ... Simon Cran-McGreehin, head of analysis at the Energy and Intelligence Unit, said: "Even if the war ended tomorrow it will take years to unpick all the damage done to supply chains in the energy and other sectors".
Tom Edwards, a senior analyst at the energy market consultancy Cornwall Insight, said that prices may peak this year or next, but are likely to stay high until at least the end of the decade. "We will not get back down to the pre-crisis levels until to 2030s or even 2040s", he said.
(Michele) DellaVigna (an analyst at Goldman Sachs) believes the crisis ... will last for at least 5 to 10 years. "Globally we spent $1.5 trillion (on energy) in 2014. And that number came down to below $1 trillion in 2020. We think we need to spend at least between $1.5 and $2 trillion if we want to have a well functioning, decarbonising energy system that can provide energy for a growing world population".
